Currently every block has only one texture, and when a bunch of the same block are placed together, you get a tessellating effect that can be ugly and hard on the eyes.
I think each block should have several, very similar but distinct textures that are applied randomly when they are generated. Refreshing the fog level would reset this.
Basically, I think this would give Minecraft a slightly better visual feel. And if this caused lag on slower computers, it could be applied for fancy graphics only.
I'd suggest some kind of partially transparant texture that lays over all 6 sides of the regular texturing of a block. The semi-transparant texture would have been rotated 90, 180 or 270 degrees randomly for each block. - I just think Mojang would like this solution because it saves space unnessessarily and can be applied to all blocks.
I'm not sure if that would help anything at all. Maybe if you want brightness edits, the same can be done with one texture of a certain darkness and randomising the tranparancy of that texture from 50% to 90% before it's laid over a block's original texture.

We're officially a work in progress and we could always use some extra hands.

That's part of it... but also I think it would make the game look more interesting, and without using mods.
