[the following notes where found by a abandoned camp site of which many scrolls where found. mostly of the first type]
By the ruins and strongholds found a cross the land every one knows taht they where not the first on the minecraft world. In fact most wonder what happened to the crafters of old, that my friends lies in some forgotten scrolls found in stronghold libraries. There are 3 scrolls taht have been found fire dart scrolls, portal scrolls, and enderman scrolls.
The first scrolls found in the libraries was the fire dart scrolls, these scrolls seem to allow any one that reads them to cast a fireball. This fireball acts like the ones we have seen being shot of by ghasts when ever an exploration team heads to the nether. This scroll has minimal effect on creatures of the nether even though most of the scrolls we have found are in strange netherbrick towers in the nether.
the second scroll type was found While studding a pile of fire dart scrolls in one of the nether towers as we have been calling them one of the workers found some scrolls that where different from the fire darts unlike the fire dart scrolls which are written on red parchment and glow orange when read these ones where written on black parchment and glow purple when read. After studying the black scrolls for a while we found that they allow the user to teleport to where ever they are working. IT is unfortunate that Steve are tester discovered this while looking at a bird. these scrolls are rare and only work once as far as we can tell.
The last scroll type was found in a nether tower taht was over run by pigmen not zombie pig men but actual pigmen as soon as the researcher grabbed it they attacked him with out warning. He was able to get the scrolls he found to us. The scrolls he brought are the most interesting scrolls we have found in the fact that they explain what happened to the crafters of old. We have dubbed theses scrolls enderman scrolls. As they allow one to turn into an enderman for the time of 24 minecraftian hours. the enderman form has the ability to walk by hostiles with out them even seeing the enderman form in fact other endermen don't even seem to see the person using the scroll. Many of the group wonder what will happen if one reads the ender scroll while holding a enderpearl. I my self have volunteered for this trial... (no further notes where found.)

NETHER TOWERS
info: towers made of nether brick that have 4 to 6 stories. they are found in the nether and always cointains large amounts of books, books shelves, and paper. scrolls are always found in the chests in stacks of 1 to 10 (max stack in active when stacked)
floor types:
::libary:: (always have)(soem towers are only this)
contains: book shelves and chests as well as what looks liek chairs and tables (same why as in npc vilages), glowstone lighting
::armory::
contains: chests with godl swords, a forge like area glowstone lighting
::the grand chest:: (pigmen spawn on this floor)
contains: a large double chest with a ender scroll and some random scrolls and paper, 2 pillars of iron bars, ender pearls in side chests.
Whoa whoa whoa, careful with the word "scrolls", Bethesda's lawyers might send you a letter.
But in all seriousness;
This would be a pretty fun addition to the game in terms of getting rare loot after pillaging a place, I know it'd make me feel a lot more accomplished if I had stumbled upon these. What the scrolls do, however, would need some fine tuning in the end. We dont want them too powerful.
There's going to a lot of conflict with this idea, though. Mostly because Notch doesn't want magic involved in the game.
I like the idea of getting some special abilities.
Some 'spells' that might be useful in minecraft:
-Healing
-Removing poison/sickness
-Filling your belly
-Teleport to surface, or to home
-Fire/lava resistance
-Underwater breathing
-Invisibility
-Flight
-Weapon Enchantments (either permanent or not)
-Water Walking
-Speed
-Wards (protect an area?)
I like the idea of these being difficult to obtain, but maybe not too rare. Rather than having it be like, oh how lucky I am... maybe also have it so if you want them you can get them- but it ain't easy. Most wouldn't be something you use every day. They'd be your ultimate trump card.
I've heard people talking about "boss mobs," maybe they could be a prize? You get somewhere hard to get, provide something hard to find, and summon something hard to kill. If you win you get one of these. Maybe once you get one you learn the 'recipe.'
eta- Did Notch really say he didn't want magic? The bone meal is pretty magic, as are most of the mobs. Necromancy etc. I thought an alchemy table was in the works (long term.) Maybe it could be magic potions?
while the scrolls are technically magic they aren't what most people think of when they here the word magic.
Also civfan, the number of types of scrolls would need to be highly limited as to not make them to common or not worth having. Having 3 types of something that is rare is better than having 20 types of something that is rare as people will not go looking for them because I wouldn't be worth it in the long run.

But if there were a few that you could find.. then learn how to make them, but they're hard to make, it'd be worth it. It'd add a 'quest' to the game. Find the scroll that teaches you how to fly or breath water or..whatever. Especially useful on SMP servers where a group could go looking for it (and the reagents needed for each casting.) Enchant your weapons etc.
