What I used to do in mines was to never put two torches next to each other unless I wanted to show which way was out.
One on the floor and one on the wall. The one on the wall showing the direction out or back by its position relative to the one on the floor.
As for uses of rope, perhaps could be used to subdue mobs. You could use it to leash a pig for example and then tie him to a fence. The rope would make him unable to despawn. Very usefull for farming eggs...

Maybe you'd have to make the rope into a lasso to do that.
I agree with the idea for a Rope item. I'm not sure if it should be used to chain down mobs or trail behind you as long as you have it on you while venturing.
Thing is, venturing out into a cave is challenging and making a long enough rope is a challenge an sich. Nonetheless, if ropes can be picked up again and used infinitely, the trailback use is a little overpowered to be in the vanilla version, but pretty darn handy anyway.
Binding mobs has become a little obsolete because mobs rarely despawn (or spawn) anymore. I have caught two sheep in a pen of which I'm sure they'll be there when I come back from venturing 100s of chunks away.
I'd like to use Rope for attaching it to the underside of any other block, or even the underside of other Rope. That would be decorative and any other blocks attached to the underside of Rope get gravity like Sand or Gravel. Plus, perhaps you could even hang the upcoming Lanterns on them. Just a few suggestions there.
I've been exploring some more caves, and honestly, I pine for that Ariadne's Thread thing. Sure, you can use more cumbersome techniques, but it'd be so much simpler to use that item. It'd also provide a use for those hundreds of strings I have and don't use (and those many more hundreds I've just thrown away against the cactus of my mob factory, to make room for items I needed).
Torches are fine but when your cave is 60 blocks high with multiple entries on different heights, and with ways to 8 different exits, I'd either need a rather complex indication system, or just a damn rope. I'll take the damn rope.
This is like: you meet a strange who doesn't speak your language. You are dying of thirst, and want water, do you:
1) mimic drinking
2) invent an international language so you can ask for water
I don't see why I'd not take the simplest means to my end.
Which is exactly what I said in my opening statement. It's a rope, it can have dozens of other uses, why don't you suggest one?
Well I didn't see where you said it could have multiple uses. I can't think of any uses right now.
Excellent ideas, all of them.
Maybe you'd have to make the rope into a lasso to do that.
