This is my suggestion on how to improve the bow system. So far in my use of the bow I have found that in the new 1.8.1 update when fully drawn you can get a good range off of the bow. That said it is highly lacking in damage. It takes up to 5 fully drawn arrows to kill a single creeper or archer. My recommendation is not to simply up the damage of the bow but to make more types of arrows. My ideas are as follows.
Arrowheads : Stone, Explosive, Iron(Heavy), and Diamond(Heavy AP)
Umm.. it only takes me two fully drawn arrows to kill creepers and skeletons..
I testing it in single, apparently it is only in SMP that it does very low damage. My friend and I tested it and he took 2 hearts of damage from a full charge. (No armor)
Eh, I think instead of more bows there should be a crossbow to upgrade.
is a bow.
What it has over a bow is longer range, more damage, And the ability to "lock" your shot. (Hold right mouse until you hear a "click" and you're ready to fire.)
The cons: Slower charge, Can't fire unless fully charged, (Witch means NO CRITS.), and more expensive ammo.
AMMO: Bolts.
= ONE bolt! (You kill things in like two hits, At a long range at that! It should make you feel the wallet pain when firing...)
This also means bows will need a slight nerf...
Bow: 3 full charges to kill a creeper/skeleton/spider/whatever
Crossbow: 2 shots do the same thing. (Is it worth the waste of iron though? You could just charge it with your diamond sword!)

This is a good idea but I would like to see other types of arrows. Also it could be possible to add this in most likely 2.0. I could come up with other melee weapons types to correspond with the addition to bows.
Melee addition to work with bows.
Parts: New sword types, New weapon types, Shields to boost blocking effect, Equipment menu redo.
Sword Types Added: Long-sword, Broad-sword, Scimitar. (The normal sword renamed to short sword)

To select the arrow type used I recommend adding a quiver to the player equipment menu.
If I was helpful, funny, or you just feel like it, please press the green + button, it's always appreciated.

Perhaps include a quiver to the player equipment menu. That way you can select what arrows to fire.
maybe you could choose what type of arrow you shoot by putting the arrows in a special place above your inventory. (like you do with armor)
I added a quiver to the end of the original post.
