With the new 1.8 oceans being so expansive and deep, I always wanted to see whales implemented into the game.
I don't like to sit in one place for too long, so I like to venture out into the open ocean, creating little houses on islands as I go. If anyone else does this, you would know coal isn't exactly easy to find on a small island. If there were whales around and we could kill them for whale fat to power furnaces, I think that would be a great addition to the game.
I'm not sure how powerful it would be, if it would be better than, equal to, or slightly worse than coal. I was thinking they could drop multiple "whale fat" like a squid drops multiple ink sacs. I also don't know how high HP would be, would they be a mini-boss you have to fight from your boat, or just another mob with average HP. I was also thinking of making 2 types of whales, Killer whales (hostiles) and some other type (blue whales perhaps?) that are non-hostile(Until provoked - Neutral?).
Let me know what you think, and feel free to add any suggestions to whales or some other sea creatures, I'm REALLY looking forward to feedback. :tongue.gif:
PS. Sorry about how unorganized this is, if it gets a lot of feedback I'll try to organize it, I just want to see what people think.
I ventured out going in the same direction with my trusty ol' wooden boat today. And rowed that son of a ***** in an ocean that took an hour of exploration. And decided to turn back because it was too long. And its still generating.
Other than that, I'd like to see whales in the game.
Would be easier to make a big white whale a rare boss character in the future 1.9 update.
MAN THE HARPOONS!
Harpoons...Now I want a boat big enough to walk around on with a harpoon gun on the front of it...let's try to make this on a 3x3 crafting grid! LOL :smile.gif:

I know what you mean by an hour of exploration, I've had many failed attempts at trying to find land when I set sail on my little boat. They all seem like a never ending bodies of water.
Nice. I just dont like the Killer Whale. Just because their name is "killer" dont means they're aggressive. They should be Neutral.
True, but I like the idea of being forced to fight or having my boat destroyed. I'd love a hostile water mob, especially one much larger than myself. Thanks for the feedback though.

I have always wanted to see a mine-craft blue whale. (and elephant, but that's off topic.) But how would it be modeled? how would it function in game to have a creature more then 30 meters in length? I have always taught it would be kind of awkward to have a creature that massive in game, so i never suggested it. I think if there is one in game it should either be all but impervious and should ignore the player's attempts to damage it, or maybe lazily swim away and dive. At worst it should try to drag the player to the bottom of whatever body of water its in and attempt to drown him or throw him high into the air without ever directly damaging the player. (off topic: must has tame-able elephant!)
Edit: If you want a large, hostile water mob why not a great white or a Megalodon? (Wiki it)

Yea, the size might be an issue...I wouldn't be able to think of a reasonable one...and I like the idea of elephants. Maybe a mountable elephant with a saddle that can charge like the sprinting and destroy dirt/sand/gravel blocks.
Anyway, the problem with whales is that normally whales tend to spend most of their time deep underwater. Unless there was a way to see and breathe underwater (diving helmets - which there is a mod for, btw), you would rarely ever come into contact with whales because when you go more than a few blocks underwater, it becomes almost pitch black, even on a high brightness setting
Minecraft was almost never (which, by the way, is an interesting concept) about realism. I approve of neutral whales which spawn in ocean biomes and move at the water surface, which do not attack but have an enormous amount of health.
Just randomly brainstorming here, but maybe the player could interact with whales in other ways. Whales are pretty intelligent, I've heard.
I've had the whale idea myself, down to whale fat, even. An ingredient in torches, slightly inferior fuel for furnaces... I figure there should only be one whale mob, based off a blue whale I guess.
In order to make boats useful aside from being fast, what about sharks too? Aggressive water mobs that attack anything in the water, dropping raw fish upon death...
There could be sharks too. That'd make going into the water a concern... they shouldn't be too common, though.
The ocean is cool but I do agree that being able to live off it entirely would be nice. So you could either be a miner, a farmer, an explorer, or a sailor. Many career choices! :smile.gif:
Before anything like this is implemented Notch needs to fix the spazzzzZZZZzzzzzzZZZZZzzzzy squids. Imagine a giant whale doing that! Also squids should take damage when deprived of air.

It should also swallow you and load a new chunk in which you play the game INSIDE the whale :ohmy.gif: (jk)
LOL that would be awesome.
No, they should spawn on top of mountains, silly
