yea there should be some kind of currency in 1.9 read and reply and all that if u agree or disagree. I am just sick of all the un officcial currency like iron some servers got goin on
They're working on a skill points/abilities system for 1.9, I hear. The currency idea isn't bad, but I think it'd be better as a mod than a mandatory update.
If my server required currency, I would either use iConomy (or a similar money-based mod), or just tell the players to trade for what they think is fair. So basically, they define the value of different items.
But more OT, I think currency would be better as a mod, or at least make it optional.
Currency is kinda useless. Dollars and such are basically pieces of paper saying you own oh-so-much gold. That's one of the reasons for the dollar going down. The amount of gold stays the same as we get more paper meaning the amount of gold (I'm using gold as an example here, it's other precious metals too I believe. Can't really remember well) each piece is worth is less.
Back on topic every time you pay a dollar for something you are effectively trading. That's all it really is. Money is not some third force that dictates what you can and can't get. It's just trading one thing for another.
I for one don't want currency in minecraft.

Clicking on her makes me happy, and keeps her alive.
You wouldn't want to kill a poor little dragon would you? You monster?
not a bad idea, however, the money would be crafted out of iron, gold, and diamond anyways so there is little to no point to put a legit price on them, because u are technically still trading iron, gold, and diamond. Not to mention, I'de rather use my iron and diamond for pick axes and swords rather than to buy wood, brick, and sandstone when it isn't that hard to find in the first place. But, it is a good thing to think about i guess, but not for an update, just a mod.

I've used up all of my sick days, so now I'm calling in dead.
Currency gets it's value from the government that prints it, prior to that it was just a way to swap precious metals for other goods. If someone trades their iron, gold, etc. for whatever you have, it doesn't really matter what it is. Money is convenient because we can carry lots of it with us unobtrusively. Since Steve can carry enough gold to sink the Bismark in his pockets, it seems a moot point.
Of course, my opinion isn't very relevant, because I always play single-player.
Now that I think about it, if they implement NPC villages, they'll probably need some sort of currency to use there.

Well I was thinking paper with some sort of new, rare dye
What will you do with the money in mincecraft?
I mean i want 1 diamond and the other guy wants 6 iron, i give him 6 iron he gives me 1 diamond and that all.
But if money is in and there are like 5 players it will be diferent like:
I give him money and i get iron but what is he going to do with the money if the other player dont need money but items?

The only thing I worry about is that it would then be too easy to get hard to find items.
