Well, I have a great suggestion regarding the currently useless sponge block. My idea is that like clay or pumpkins, sponges should spawn in the world. However, unlike pumpkins or other ores, sponge blocks will spawn underwater between a depth of 8-15 blocks deep. They can be collected with your bare hands but are completely worthless until baked in a furnace. Once baked a sponge will be able to collect a 3x3x3 area of water. Sponges will also be non-flammable and will have the same explosive resistance as sand or perhaps even less.
Riddle me this: How exactly does baking a sponge make it any more absorbant? I mean, in theory you could say that baking it dries it out, evaporating the water inside the sponge. OH. There we go! Single-use sponges that need to be resmelted to be used again!
So basically, get a wet sponge from an ocean biome.
Take it back home and place it in your furnace to dry it out.
Once dry, it functions as normal.
When placed, if it absorbs any water, it becomes a wet sponge again, needing to be dried out for further use, even though it's wet it will still keep the area from flooding.
I like this, I'm going to go post it on GetSatisfaction right now.
