We all got excited when the map was implemented and most of us were dissapointed when we found out it's slightly less useful than our own memories considering our own buildings don't appear, you can't use it to map caves, and the only way to see something in the dirt that you've marked is if it is something big. So, I've thought of an obvious solution that incorporates the well-used Sticks and the ill-used Cloth of various color to make Flags.
To create a flag of your choosing you simply need two Sticks and one Cloth of your chosen color like so:
Flags, when right-clicking on a block, would be place like a torch (diagonal on the side of a block, upright if on top) and would "mark" a spot visible from the map as a tiny flag only if named. If not named it would not appear as a marked point on the map leaving it open as a decoration for houses/castles.
This brings to mind another idea of mine which changes the way maps work. Instead of walking around with it blocking up your vision whilst trying to navigate it would instead pop up when selected on your bar making it possible to use your cursor to highlight a point on the map you're going to then dissapear when selecting something else.
The use for these markers will become greater in 1.8 as opposed to post-1.8 because biomes are much larger now thus making it more difficult to navigate or remember where things are without the costly torch"crumbs".
Quick note: Check out BobWhiskey's topic on hanging maps on walls for an extended use for this.
Seeing as you're not supposed to bump your own topics I simply added to my old topic, copy/pasted it, and made it a new topic. With my new additions I hope to remove questions from last topic as well.
