How many countless times have you gotten lost, been killed by a creeper from behind, or had a hard time finding a specific animal? Mob footprints are useful.
When a mob (including you) steps, a translucent pixeled overlay, the footprint, will appear right under the foot and on the block. Only some blocks show footprints. How do footprints go away? Well, after 5 minutes, the footprint will disappear. If you dislike footprints or they create lag, there's no need to worry. Footprints will only appear in Fast Graphics.
How are footprints useful? Well, each mob has a unique footprint. If you need leather, look around for a trail of cow footprints. Follow the trail until you find the cow, unless it despawned. If you get lost and you can't find your way back, follow your own footsteps! If there is a creeper trail going up a mountainside, it's best to stay away from it. If there is a trail of pig footprints heading towards your watermelon farm, you can go save your farm before it's too late.
Here is a sloppy chart with some mob's footprints. This chart was made before silverfish, enderman, blue spiders, and I forgot the player. I will very soon update the chart with all the rest of the mobs.
As you can see, spiders and slimes don't have footsteps. Why? Spiders don't make footstep sounds nor can they trample crops. Slime's can't exactly have footprints, but I'm considering they leave behind a splatter of slime on any block...
The blocks that footprints can appear on are:
Dirt
Grass
Sand
Gravel
Snow
Soul Sand
Sponge

I am meowing at my lung’s fullest. I would even argue that the echo that reverberates back to me is the voice of someone I know…
