With the new, more realistic (Which is stupid, why should it be that overly realistic in a game with zombies?), food is basically useless in keeping you alive in a pinch, making many mob pretty difficult if you are not a extremely skilled mob fighter. For example the new Blue Spider mob, with it's quick speed and poison, is extremely difficult to defeat.
What i suggest is the addition of potions. Potions would be made by first creating a Glass Vial, and a Cauldron. A cauldron wound need to cook as a furnace does, but have the crafting table crafting size. You would put whatever ingredients to make a potion into the 3x3 crafting thing, and then let it cook as you would with a furnace, and fill up one of your vials with it. This potion would heal you, but not affect your hunger. (Maybe make you a bit hungrier?) Maybe different potions could even do different things. Temporary Increased Speed, Temporary Increased Block Destruction, and so on.
Either that, or let food heal us a bit right away. Ktnxbai.
Potions? No thank you. You can't heal on the fly, which makes sense. Before, I could run into battle against any odds and simply heal as I fought through waves of monsters.
Now?
I FEAR having to go outside at night. When I am wandering a cave, I have to be extremely careful not to take on a lot of mobs at once. The mode is called "Survival" for a reason.
However, the hunger bar makes being out for long periods of time more viable... because food is stackable and regens your health over time. You just can't survive in intense combat for very long.
