You can reduce the amount of RAM allowed using a batch file, but you can't make Minecraft take up less RAM yet run smoothly. You can have updates or you can have less CPU-intensive servers. It's your choice.

I disagree. A server doesn't need to use over a GB of RAM for 8 players running around in a 3D environment. Look at the hundreds of games out there which require far less RAM.
I don't think Notch has optimized his code, or Java was just a horrible choice for a game. I have a feeling it is a combination of both.
Something will need to happen, or he's going to kill his own game as more content is added. Multiplayer carries this game along, and while I think single player is still fun, the game will die without multiplayer.
I'm surprised this issue isn't brought up more often. I know many host a server at home over their cable connection, so maybe RAM is not an issue, but for those dedicated servers which are hosted in a data center...RAM is not cheap!
Notch should really consider finding ways to reduce the RAM use. Requiring 2-4GB of RAM just to host a decent sized map with 10-20 players is crazy!
While the CPU use usually isn't too bad in Minecraft, the RAM requirements are outrageous when compared to most FPS game servers.
Dedicated SMP servers are what will really keep this game going in the future, but not if the RAM requirements continue to increase.

Downgrade, use OptiFine mod, then wait for OptiFine to catch up with 1.8/1.9 before upgrading.
Unless it's client-side only?
