Much like a dungeon chest, a shopkeeper would have random loot to sell, and each shopkeeper has a random item that they are looking for. So in one NPC village the shopkeeper wants feathers, and in another they are looking for ores, and then Strong Mob Materials in another. so the level of the Shopkeeper then dictates what they want. so a shopkeeper with torches, and stone weapons and etc. will trade for feathers, the next will be like iron tools and armor and stuff, for ores like coal and Iron etc. and then another will have diamond stuff but wants like Nether materials, or strong mob materials like gunpowder or Ender pearls... something like that.
There is a mod for this, although its 1.7.3 so it generates it's own villages, so I don't know how that would conflict. Anyway, its called millienare or something like that, search for it under yogscast

edit: I think this idea may have already been suggested though, I know travelling merchants has :x.

At least contribute to the suggestion itself? I don't want this to be dismissed just because someone made a mod for it.
