So, animals are going to be breedable in 1.9 apparently, allowing us to create many things, such as wool, hide, egg, milk and pork farms.
This sounds like it will make it much easier to get animals now, instead of running around looking for them, we can put them into pens and let them breed (wool will apparently regrow too :biggrin.gif:)
UPDATE: With 1.8, animals don't despawn, but they cannot be bred yet.
But lets look at something else: The WOFIEZ. (coughehem) Yes, the wolves. :tongue.gif:
Wolves
So, with breeding, its only natural that we should be able to breed wolves.
First, it would be very interesting if wolves had:
Varying coats
(randomly generated, using colors like brown, black, grey, and white)
This would be very interesting in my opinion, and make our wolves stand out a little bit more. :smile.gif:
Inventory screen
You would be able to place armour on your wolf (regular armour, you wouldn't need to craft special wolf armour)
There would also be a box to name your wolf, and the name would show up underneath your wolf like in multiplayer.
You could also choose to give your wolf one item (with a max stacking of 5) to hold, which would not be lost in case of your death, and maybe if your inventory happened to be full.
Breeding Mechanics
First off, you would need to build a dog house. This would have multible purposes:
1. Placing your wolf in the dog house would slowly regain its health. (I'm thinking maybe about 1/2 the speed you heal on Peaceful mode?).
2. This would be a handy spot to store your wolves whom you don't want to accompany you if you don't want them just sitting out in the open, and they would heal while you were away.
3. Placing two wolves in the dog house would give them the chance to mate. Every 2 minutes, there would be a 1/3 chance that your wolves would produce a puppy. (However, they will only have 1 puppy per session in the dog house. You'd have to take them back out and place them back in before they could attempt to breed again)
The puppy would be pretty useless, but cute. It will not attack any mobs, and instead will move if a mob gets close to it, and it will not be able to carry anything or wear armour, but you will be able to name it.
After 2 full days (day and night) your puppy will grow into a adult wolf, and act like a regular adult wolf, breedable and able to fight.
4. Wolf stats. We are getting stats and things for ourselves, why not the wolves?
Every wild wolf will have two stats: Speed and Strength.
Speed and Strength will be shown under the avatar of your wolf in the inventory screen for it, in little meters.
A wild wolf will automatically have 1-2/5 speed, and 1-3/10 strength already.
Breeding your wolves will pass down good stats, and a pup will have the chance of going 1 up on its parents stat. So to explain:
Parent Wolf 1, 'Joe' has the following stats:
2/5 speed
1/10 strength
Parent Wolf 2, 'Mary' has the following stats:
1/5 speed
3/10 strength
The puppy's speed and strength will go by the parent's speed and strength, but only by the one with the highest stat.
So the progeny of Joe and Mary will have the following stats:
2/5 speed
3/10 strength
And it will have a 1/2 chance that speed or strength will be raised by one, so these are the possible combinations for Joe and Mary's puppy:
2/5 speed (0+)
3/10 strength (0+)
3/5 speed (1+)
4/10 strength (1+)
3/5 speed (1+)
3/10 strength (0+)
2/5 speed (0+)
4/10 strength (1+)
And to make a little more interesting, the puppy will have a 1/15 chance of having 2+, which will help you by having to breed less to get the best wolf possible.
Herding
You are going to need to corral animals in 1.9 to have a farm, and wolves seem like the natural choice for the job.
You will be able to herd a animal by clicking your wolf, then clicking your target animal, e.g, a sheep, and then finally clicking the destination herding spot. (Must be accessable to your wolf and herd animal)
Your wolf will run out, and run behind the herd animal and chase it to that location. (You may have to repeat this process a few times to get a animal from far away to a pen you made somewhere else)
Once you herd it in, you can shut the gate, and the animal is yours!
Also:
The way I think you would build a dog house is by placing blocks like this:
And also, Artic Wolves would be interesting. They would be pure white wolves only found rarily in tundra, harder to find then regular wolves, and since snow will be returning in 1.9 (same version as breeding) this is a perfect time to introduce Artic Wolves.
The difference between Artic Wolves and Regular Wolves:
Artic Wolves will start with 2-3/5 speed, and 2-4/10 strength instead of 1-2/5 sped and 1-3/10 strength.
They will also have a 3/4 chance of having more snow white puppies, with 10% of white puppies being born with grey or other colored flecks or spots, and the 1/4 of them being normal coloured wolves.
Farm Animals
Sheep
Sheep will obviously grow wool, and they will have a 1/10 chance of spawning a small young sheep when they touch another sheep, but both sheep will not be able to make any more young for 1 day after they make that one sheep. (The baby sheep will grow up in 1 day, and be able to make wool)
Killing a young sheep will yield one piece of veal meat, which will yield 2 hearts when cooked and consumed.
They will also regrow wool in 1/2 a day.
Cows
Cows will yield cowhide and beef on death, and be able to be milked a max of twice per day. They will have a 1/10 chance of spawning a small young cow when they touch another cow, but they will not be able to make any more young for 1/2 a day. (The baby cows will grow up in 1 day, and be able to produce milk/cowhide/beef)
You will also be able to slap a sadle on the cows, and ride them around, going at the same speed as sprinting, but unlike regular sprinting, it will not deplete your hunger meter.
(Though be careful, cows have low health, and hostile mobs, and passive wolves, will be able to hurt your cow while trying to hurt you, and possibly kill it)
Pigs
Pigs will yield pork chops on death. They will have a 1/5 chance of spawning piglet when they touch another cow, and will not breed anymore for 1 day. The young will grow up in 1/2 a day.
Chickens
Chickens will lay eggs at the current rate, and yield feathers on death. If left on the ground, the eggs will hatch into a baby chick in 1/2 a day. The chick will grow up in 1 day.
Caring for your Farm Animals
Pigs, Sheep, Chickens and Cows will no longer be able to jump over fences or gates, allowing you to herd them inside an open gate, and shut it, effectivly keeping them inside.
Cows, Pigs, Sheep and Chickens will all need access to water, which you can supply by either giving them a bucket of water in a hole in the ground, or lining up three buckets in a row on the crafting table, which will make a trough, which will not run out of water.
Cows and Sheep will require grass to graze on, so you cannot make a floor completely out of stone. (Chickens will peck the grass for bugs or seeds)
Pigs will need farm ground (wet soil, which has been hoe'd :tongue.gif:), and will die off without it.
Threats to your farm animals
Passive wolves will not be able to jump over your fences/gates, nor will Creepers, Skeletons, Zombies or Enderman. (Though TAME wolves can jump over your fences/gates, as they pose no threat to your livestock without you attacking first)
But there will be a new threat, Hostile Wolves.
Hostile wolves will be larger then regular wolves, and have black fur with glowing eyes. They are not tameable, and will only spawn at night, with a maximum of 2 at one time, and they will only spawn in a area close to you, and will despawn if you leave the area.
They will not attack you, but instead will roam around looking for animals, which they will attack and possibly kill. Any animals killed by them will not drop any items.
Unlike regular wolves, they will be able to jump fences, and WILL attack your farm animals. If you have wolf('s) with you, and you are close by to the Hostile Wolf, and the Hostile Wolf is killing animals within a fence/gate (has to be completely closed) your Wolf('s) will leave your side and attack the Hostile Wolf, who will die fairly easily, having only 1 and a half hearts.
