Every so often (perhaps once a Minecraft week/month?), a Moonbeam will descend from Rana(a forum remembrance that's been largely forgotten by people who think "Indev" is a condiment) at midnight. It will spawn within 150 blocks of the player. It will persist for 120 seconds and will slowly thin as the moon sets. Moonbeams will resemble lightning, but will have a bluish tint and be perfectly straight.
What do they do?
Moonbeams will be rather mysterious. At their site of landing, a translucent chest will appear. It will fade with the moonbeam, but simply touching or opening one will render it solid (and it will become a normal chest). Opening it, you will find Moon Rocks, which are powerfully magnetic (for some reason). They can be placed as a block, and will fall like gravel or sand (Read further for uses!).
Furthermore, any creeper touched by a moonbeam will become an ethereal Lunar Creeper. Lunar Creepers will not damage blocks when they explode, but will do twice the damage to entities. They will move faster than the player, but will burn very quickly if they are not in Rana's light. This is the one time when moving into a darker place at night will save you!
Moon Rocks
Moon Rocks will have a few uses, many of which invoke the properties of Rana itself (and lots more that are just made up). Let's list them:
- Moon Rocks will conduct and affect redstone communications due to their magnetic nature. One will conduct (and glow like lightstone), but if two are connected, watch out! They will invert the current. A group of three Moon Rocks will conduct current as usual. And any group of more than four Moon Rocks will be completely inert to current.
- Moon Rocks will be able to be crafted with redstone to create Gate Blocks. Certain configurations would beget certain gates, which would tremendously simplify redstone computing.
- Moon Rocks can be crafted into four units of Moon Dust. Moon Dust can be crafted with a stick to create Rana's Tears(upon being removed and then forgotten by the community? now I'm crying a bit too. *sob*), torch equivalents that cast a very dim glow. However, they have an influence beyond their pathetic light levels: they will double monster spawnrates (this effect would not stack), and will also have a chance of spawning Lunar Creepers instead of normal creepers (about 1/20 chance). However, creepers that wander into the glow of Rana's Tears will not transform into Lunar Creepers.
- Moon Rocks will also attract all metal-based items to them, if there's space. This influence will extend for about 5 blocks. This includes iron, gold (I know, just go with it), arrows (the tips sure look metal to me!), everything crafted with metals, and Lunar Creepers (for no reason whatsoever). Therefore, if you're afraid of Lunar Creepers, just place some Moon Rocks around your home! They will be attracted to the Moon Rocks from long distances (up to 10 blocks away) and will burn as soon as the moon sets.
