I think it'd be pretty great if we had this choice. I know sometimes I'd like to start in a Mountain Biome while other times I may want to create a new world in the middle of an Ocean Biome on an island.
While you can somewhat pull this off by looking up various seeds, I think it'd be pretty cool if it was just one of the options in world generation.
Yeah, I think it could be a handy feature. But it may screw up the world generation a bit.
And it would probally take a lot of coding to make sure the worlds always generate with ALL types of biomes.
I'm not so sure it'd screw up world generation, it'd just be another variable to it.
Each seed would generate differently depending on what biome you want to start in.
While nice, near impossible coding wise. It would have to make the first 500 blocks be that kind of biome, then have to resume stronghold generation, then ocean scale variation, then all ocean variation. And 500 blocks is much larger than a biome, biomes are on average about 80-210 blocks. Minecraft is NOT good at handling multiple generation codes.
Why don't they Just Auto-Script The Update if they selected it and you can only choose from a few different Choices that notch and Jeb chose like Mountains, Tundra, Ocean, Grassland. The List goes On and On.
I don't see why...extra stuff you don't really need when you can research a bit for "ocean/mountain" seeds and use those. The biomes are much larger now and I've already seen a ton of giant ocean seeds.
But having one biome for the whole world is completely different than what one you start in.

"My love for you is like a truck. BERZERKER. Berseeeeerkeeeeer!"
Or, rather then generating a dozen worlds, just expanding out the same world until it finds the selected biome. The majority of the time the selected biome is somewhere reasonably close, typically within 1 map's distance you will find the majority of if not all of the available biomes. Just keep generating map until the game finds the one requested and make the spawn point somewhere within that biome. No changes to the generation code, still able to select a seed. It'll just take a little bit of time to make the world.

Thoughts?

Hopefully, this can get to notch. :3
Oh, and if life gives you more lemons, make Chocolate Rain!
Because I dump every world that I spawn in a snow/taiga biome.
