Hello, I am here because I have recently heard tht endermen are underpowered and not really creepy. And I completely agree. They aren't in the least bit creepy. Yet they aren't underpowered. It's just tht everyone wants them overpowered, so I've found a way to balance that.
Change 1: In Terms of Balance
This change is to balance them. You may know that every time a spider (or maybe skeleton) spawns, there is a 1/100chance it is a spider jockey. Well I propose that everytime a zombie spawns, there is a 1/30 chance that it is an enderman. I think that's really all that needs to be balanced in this way. The other changes are more apparent.
Change 2: Is It Really Creepy?
Endermen aren't creepy. Creepers are. I'm constantly afraid that a creeper may come out and blow me to pieces. As Notch said, it's more about being afraid something could happen, and when you look at an enderman, you know it's your fault. I want to truly capture that feeling, and turn it into fear of the night. So I propose a few sub-changes within this change.
Sub-Change 1: Constant Fear
As I said, I am scared of creepers, because I'm constantly afraid that they will blow me up. yet they aren't designed to be SCARY, moreso dangerous. And Notch did a great job with that, too. Yet endermen aren't even slightly scary, so I think endermen should have something like that added to them. I would like to suggest that whenever you go within 7 blocks of an enderman, there is a 7% chance it will become hostile. For every second you stay in that radius, it grows by 7%. This gives the player a sense that they are in constant fear of the enderman at all times.
Sub-Change 2: You did it, and you alone.
Notch said he wanted you to look at an enderman and know it's your fault. It's your fault you did it. Your fault that you looked at it. Now you have to counter it! Right now, that is just all too easy to do. Yet what if it wasn't too easy, it would develop that sense that the player shouldn't want to look at the enderman, and if they do, they should regret it. I think that a good way to accomplish this would be to make it so that if a player's gaze passes over an endermen, then everything other than the endermen should slowly fade out and become darker until you look away. Then he will strike. And about him striking, it is rather lame.
Sub-Change 3: You Call That A Punch?!
As I said, an Enderman's attack is lame. I thought of a great way to make this better. Instead of walking quickly towards, and enderman should make everything within 15 blocks around him darker by 2 light levels, and sprint towards you. And on a side note, I hink it'd be awesome if lightning shot down randomly every couple seconds within those 15 blocks, but I know that's completely impractaical... anyways, they run towards you. With a better animation. That doesn't look like a powerwalk. So the change is, they dash towards you when hostile, and everything within 15 blocks of them is 2 light levels darker. Scary.
Change 3: General Changes
There are other things about how the enderman acts I'd like changed. For one, they pick up blocks. I think this is cool, yet look at their animation. Sooo not creepy. So I suggest they're hunched over, and whn they pick up a block, they hold it like theyre guarding a diamond or something. Then they place it somewhere else. Mwahahahaha. Also, it might help to say right now that endermen should not pick up player-placed blocks in my opinion. I'm fine with it being in the game, but keeping with the fact that alerting an enderman shoud be your fault, it doesn't really work out.
That's my suggestion for balancing the enderman. Sorry if I wasn't supposed to post this for whatever reason, I didn't know. I couldn't find anything else like it, and Iwas hoping that the endermen upon rleease would act more like this. They really are kind of lame... their concept is awesome, but in all honesty, I'm more scared of the silverfish or cave spider. Silverfish are scary since you know you could be attacked any time you mine a block, and cave spiders are perilous creatures when exploring those lovely and quaint abandoned mining shafts.
I'll be honest with you, 15 blocks is ALOT. Odds are you wouldn't even SEE the enderman by hte time he goes up to you, and the 2 lighting lvels darker thing doesn't help. What WOULD be good however, would be him doing more damage. Although, he IS creepy, ever seen his eyes turn red and his head start shaking? I did that when building my house over a ravine, if he didn't fall down that ravine, I would've freaked out. Oh, and teleporting makes him CREEPIER, so if you duck under a 2 block tall ledge and now your in a field, or you slam the door in your house, he can still get you if he teleports. And honestly, scary and creepy are two different things. Up Enderman's power, and he goes from creepy (An enemy you cannot run from and is very disturbing) to scary. But, however, scary AND creepy is won by the silver fish. Wriggleing, powerful, and pops out of no where. THAT'S scary.

Ya, I guess 15 blocks is a lot. Would 7 be a bit more viable, do you think?
Him doing more damage, as you said, makes him scary. I want the feel Notch decribed on his blog, where when you aler an enderman, you know it's your fault, and when you haven't, you have the constant fear you will...
And I didn't say he wouldn't still teleport, if that's what you're implying by that.
That's why I didn't want to up their power, I wanted to change the way they acted.
I agree, I don't mine anymore unless I have too. Definitely not branch mine... whenever I see one, I see a thousand! *shivers*
EDIT: btw, the main reason i wanted the area around endermen to become darker is so that you could tell when you neared one and your brain received an alarm call saying "RUUUUUN!!!!!!"
