Since the 1.8 prerelease, mobs don't spawn as frequently and don't despawn, which tells me that there is a plan for ranching in the next update. But before the next update is released, it's annoying to have to memorize locations of mobs that haven't died so you can collect milk, wool, eggs, etc. So instead of needing to travel outwards from your base to collect these things, I'd like to see an inclusion of a lasso to be used as a way to move mobs from one location to another.
It'd act like a fishing rod when connected to an entity, but instead of only moving the mob when the line is pulled back, it instead pulls the mob with in a certain distance of the player, and then is pulled along the player at that distance so the player can move said mob to his/her base.
The lasso could also act as a fighting tool, for bringing skeletons towards the player to kill easily with your sword.
and for crafting, I was thinking of something like this:
