With the new think in 1.8 called the strongholds and only 1 spawns in each world. There should be some kind of boss room. With is own unique spawner. And the boss should also have its smp and ssp versions. So that way you can take it solo and on a server you can do it with a team or solo if you want it more difficult. Now the boss will have ot have a few attacks that can be a little hard to avoid because well its a boss, not a giant. And killing it should have it should give you a very good reward but not to good.
Ok here is what I have in mind. It should have 500 hearts. Its melee attack should do 10 hearts of damage (No armor) And its ranged attack should do 4 hearts(No armor) This way it will be a challenge to fight it. And would be unwise to go in there not fully prepared. And so that people can't just run in and steal the loot from the chests there should be obsidian blocks on top of them so players have to break them to gain access to the goods inside. Now for multiplayer I think it should be another kind spawner that can spawn mobs even with torchs placed around it.
Why not download the Aether Mod, its got dungeons that are complex and have boss battles.
OK if i wanted to suggest the aether i would have. But I didn't I suggested a simple boss for the strong holds and with 3 I think thats better. But this is for like minecraft minecraft not the aether.
500 hearts?! do you want to make this boss take 3 hours to kill?! You would have to hit it 100 times with a Diamond sword to kill it, and since it hits 10 hearts of damage without armour, you would die in two hits leaving no room for error through the entire boss battle. especially with the new health system. this is WAY too overpowered.
also obsidian over the chests wouldn't work. players could just break the chest. It would be better to just have the chest spawn when you kill the boss OR just have the boss drop the loot.
