Note: I first would like to apologize if this has been suggested before. Now on to the idea!
The problem with animals is that they despawn if a player is too far away. This ruins farms that want to strive for maximum efficiency, but can't due to a lack of animals. A simple method of fixing this is to make animals stay spawned if they are within a fenced area. The fenced area would have to have a size limit(tons of animals = mega lag) and everything within in it(at least the ground layer) must be grass.
Now you ask. What if I want to use fences for my towns/other things? To solve this, everything must be flat within the fence OTHER then a few items such as:
Chest
Torch
Workbench
etc.
If not then no animals will spawn within it because "civilization" is too close.
Note: I know that Jeb has been thinking of ways to allow animals to last longer and I think this is a close to excellent way of solving the issue.
There are already going to be farming mechanics implemented into the game, so this suggestion is a bit pointless.
From what I understand, animals no longer ever despawn, and in future updates, spawned animals will be able to procreate to populate the map with more animals. Don't quote me on that though.
(So it's just a simple measure of getting a fence around some.)
