One use I came up with for more string is a Fuse for TNT (or other flammable material). It comes in two types: Slow-burning and Fast-burning. Slow-burning takes two string and one gunpowder:
(feather = string)
Fast-burning takes two string and three gunpowder:
Each yields 4 pieces of fuse that can be placed and lit. The rate of burning depends on type. Can set fire to blocks and set off TNT. Cannot set off redstone. Useful if you want to remotely detonate TNT but not use nonrenewable redstone that will be destroyed in the explosion, or if you want a classic fuse with a flame traveling down towards the explosives!

I had thought of something like this before. If it could light netherrack, that would be awesome for adventure maps.

NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.
So, really the main use of this block is to save redstone? One of the most abundant resources one is likely to have more than any other, save perhaps wood or cobble. (Unless of course they automate their entire house and are redstone geniuses.)
Also, with wool to string conversions, it should be the inverse of what works with string to wool. Just as nine string goes to one wool, nine wool should go to one string.

Taking trolling to a whole new level, one post at a time.
This would be a decent idea, but there is redstone already which can be used as a fuse, also I rather go down into a mine and get a ton of redstone then collect feathers and gunpowder personally.

Not feathers, string. There is no string symbol.
The fuse can be used to light anything on fire, like trees. I saw some neat Rube Goldberg machines on Youtube where they have a path of wool set on fire by lava that burns like a fuse. Why not something more Wild West style?

I think that this is a great idea... especially when ur like me who uses the town mod mostly lol. Spend more time killin creeps on top of flattening and reclaiming land than actual mining ^^
An interesting idea to say the least, I can't remember too many situations when I wanted to start a fire from far away though. Could you name any situations other than an intricate machine that would require the use of string?

I'm not sure if OP means it this way, but the way I'd imagine a fuse to work would be very similar to redstone but it would have a delay built in based on the crafted fuse length. You punch it (or light it, or whatever) and it waits 5/10/15 seconds before triggering adjacent fuses/TNT. You could put a half dozen TNT somewhere, stick 15 seconds of fuse on it, and book it.
I don't see it being immensely valuable since TNT isn't that difficult to get away from as-is, it would work best if TNT were made instant explosion or there were more powerful explosives that would gib you without a long fuse (or both!). Having fuses lightable from redstone seems counterintuitive as well, so it wouldn't really help much for the redstone-impaired who are trying to make explosive traps.
or
producing 9(?) string. IRL string can be made from nearly any fiber, so wool is reasonable. This could be thought of as "spinning".
You may say this would mean way too much string, in which case I redirect you to http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/289785-inventing-the-square-wheel/page__hl__spinning wheel where it is also brought up and other uses for all this string conjectured.

Redstone is instantaneous.

I still like it for the immersive factor, though.
