First off, this is an idea for both a mod and the vannila game, not a mod. However much it sounds like a mod, it isn't. I talk a lot in the present tense, but that's just out of habit and laziness. If someone wants to make it a mod, feel free to do so, and contact me please. This is also not an overdone thread. I did search the forums and found no suggestions with exactly my ideas. So shut up and enjoy the numerous pictures of fire.
The nether is awesome and dangerous already, there's no denying that. But haven't you always felt like something's...missing? That it's boring? Well you wouldn't have to yawn anymore, if you had BETTER NETHER! What is better nether?
Better nether is an improvement on everything that the nether has already. More monsters, better terrain, and best of all, a reason to go to the nether. Admit it, you fall asleep every time you go to that ghast infested european finance assembly. Better nether includes new natural terrains, new items, and new...EVERYTHING. O.k. then. Tell me about the new monsters
Name: Fire crawler (If you have a better name, suggest it!) Description: These dark creatures wander the nether in search of anything they can eat in the barren nether landscape. That includes you. They resemble a long spider with 10 legs, pincers and fire. Nowhere in particular, just fire. They crawl up rather than jump. Combat related info: They attack in a manner very close to zombies (straight on and physical), have 10 hearts of life, and their attacks deal 2 hearts on easy, 3 on normal, and 4 on hard.
Name: Lava lurker Description: No one knows... A lurker in pools of lava that is unseen until it launches its ferocious attack from the depths, launching tentacles and fire from the pool of lava. Be careful when walking by pools of lava... you might just die. Combat related info: Can be killed by shooting arrows in to the pools of lava where they are. Hitting the tentacles with hand or sword also deals damage to them. Have 5 hearts, attacks deal the same amount of damage as a fire crawler.
Name: Walker Description: The big demons of the nether, but surprisingly peaceful. They are 5 blocks high and 4 blocks on the ground, with a large red torso, a human face, horns, and goat legs. Call it the devil all you want, its name is the walker. Combat related info: 45 hearts, but passive until attacked. Deals 4 hearts on easy, 5.5 on normal, 7(!) on hard. Ouch.
Name: Cerberus Description: Like a wolf in the overworld but not really. For starters, they're three headed. Also, they breath fire at you. Lots of it. Next, they will laugh at your bones then incinerate you. They can be tamed however, by finding an egg that on occasion will be dropped by a passive cerberus. That egg can then be placed and then lit on fire. Keep this fire lit for 1/2 minecraft days (very easy to do), and you will get a one headed dog that will age to two then three heads if kept in the nether! This one is friendly. Combat related info: 50:50 ratio of aggressive and passive. 10 hearts untamed, deals same damage as fire crawler physical, deals 3,4.5, and 6 hearts with fireballs. 20 hearts tamed, same damage.
What about the fancy new terrain you mentioned?
The new nether terrain mimics the overworld, just more... netherish. That means there are biomes and more interesting terrain features. The new "nether biomes" are
"Forest"- filled with warped collections of netherrack, glowstone, and netherlog discussed later, forests are filled with mimics of trees. Fire crawlers are most common here, and there is very little lava in them for the nether.
"Nether"- Same old nether. Hey, It's not all bad.
"Lavaland"- Practically the opposite of the forests, lavalands are huge, flat, lava covered surfaces riddled with pools of lava and, well, more lava. The theme here is really lava. You get the idea, right? Lava?
"Walker nests"- Small, and not really a biome so much as a small section of one. These huge, rolling hills go up considerably high, then go very deep down in to caves. These are the only places that walkers can spawn, contributing to their extreme rarity.
Then there are more terrain features. Pretty much anything in the overworld that involves water becomes the same structure in the nether, just with lava instead. Oceans would be more filled in and become more lakey, but there are also rivers of lava and lavafalls, maybe even underground lava springs, with double lava instead of lava and water. Of course overworld-like terrain includes hills and cliffs and such.
What about new items/blocks? Netherlog- Like a redder log, the netherlog is in no way similar to its organic cousin. Though for most purposes wood, it isn't your minecraft noob's faveorite block. First of all, it has to be placed on netherrack or another netherlog, or it will burst in to flames. Second, nothing can be crafted using netherlog. Not just that, but if you try, you light on fire.
Brimstone(sulfur-that name is unused now!)- Glows blue and can be found by mining in the nether (yes, there's a reason to do that now) in veins of 4-10. It gives off a light level of only 9, and drops sulfur crystals. Arranging 9 sulfur crystals in the crafting grid grants one block of TNT.
Firestone- A concentrated form of netherrack, firestone will burst in to flames where ever there is room for it to. Mining it grants 1-4 firestone dust, which can be arranged in a set of four to create a firestone block. Aside from the fun of ever-present fire, they serve to create the most awesome tools EVER.
What tools are those?
Firestone creates firestone tools, of course. These all look like redder tipped-versions of the normal tools(like with red instead of diamond blue or wooden brown), but they are...you guessed it, ON FIRE. If this becomes a mod and you are the modder, please look at the "mod effects" section as well. Everyone else can ignore that, unless you see it and think it should also be part of the vanilla idea.
Firestone shovel/pickaxe- Not really special. Lasts as long as iron with the mining speed of diamond, pickaxe mines obsidian at twice the normal speed. Ignites blocks when hitting them. Mod effects: Clicking lava with buckets in the inventory and these in your hand fills the buckets all with lava, and removes the relative amount of lava.
Firestone axe- As you may have guessed, a very bad idea. It will instantly incinerate every wood block in a 9 block diameter when it his one. Fun, but ultimately useless. Mod effects: the wood burned by the firestone axe drops charcoal.
Firestone armor- as resistant as iron armor, but with the obvious added effect- no damage from fire/lava. No surprises there, but I still thought I'd mention it.
Now what you've been waiting for...Firestone swords.- Ultimately, the most worth-it item of all of them. It deals as much damage as a diamond sword, ignites all it touches, including mobs. Crazy fun and really helpful.
This concludes my suggestion, but remember that it will be updated often. I would love to hear your compliments, criticisms, car horns, dog's barks, or suggestions. Also, if you are a modder and want to make this a mod, feel free to do so, just contact me first! That is all. Please post a comment and click the green plus sign.
We already have at least two Nether mega-threads. You could just post in one of those.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
NO. Don't click New Thread. Read the rules. I don't give a damn how long or boring they are. If you do not, you will be subject to massive flaming and criticism by yours truly.
