I believe that in a Furture update or in a Mod there should be more Uses for animals. I know with 1.8 (pre-release)there has been many more features for animals, as in Chickens now drop Food along with a chance for Feathers, and Cows drop Steak along with Leather and so on. But I propose that Leather not only comes form Cows but also from Pig but in a smaller drop rate. And that Sheep can drop not only Wool (which in this idea will have a smaller drop rate , unless using a shear) but also Lamp-chops which will provide the same qualities as Pork-chops cooked or raw. And if you are to Shear a Sheep the wool would come off in more blocks but afterwards if you kill a Sheared Sheep it will NOT drop a Lamp-Chop. And I also propose for this Idea or Mod that Squids become more on the aggresive side, in where they spray a gas (a darkened block which will be basically like Air but does not stop drowning or refresh the "Breathe Bar -don't know what its called-) and this will be shot from where their mouths are and will shoot 1 block behind their mouth and then expand into a 3x3x3 box where your be slowed and will lose health at a rate of 1 a heart every 1 Second spent inside of the Gas area (this penetrates armor). This will also slow you by a small amount and will make your "Breathe Bar" lose double the amount when inside of the Cloud. Making the water even more dangerous. My next Idea is for the 1.4 update Wolves, as they make a very strong fighting companion killing one is more difficult. And when you kill one I think it should also have a chance to drop Leather, this drop rate would NOT apply to tamed wolves only Wild or Angry ones. And this last part is optional to add to the Update or Mod. Also in the Nether the main mobs are Ghasts and Pig-Zombies. Ghasts drop gunpowder only, and PigZombies drop cooked pork. I think PigZombies should still drop food but not cooked pork, but Decayed Pork- where it will heal half the amount of cooked pork and would not be able to become cooked and would also have a chance to damage you for 1 and 1/2 hearts. And as for the ghasts they should drop not only gunpowder and also the unobtainable item "Fire" (only obtainable through mod or Plugin). So that is my Ideas and Suggestions for Animals for an Upcoming Update or anyone who would like to make a mod out of this (and if you are to make a mod out of this could you please say thank you to me- Rodrak- for the Idea). I understand but for some of the beginning players or if your playing hardcore it would be more helpful. But as little as i have played 1.8 today i realize that this would not be a "top priority". And that Armor or Food resources are not the issue. But the one thing I think should be more focused are the Squids and ZombiePigmen. Mainly because the Squids are to easy to kill when realistically they are quite difficult and wouldn't go without a fight. And the Zombie Pigmen i think shouldn't drop Cooked Pork because their zombies. Giving them more of a Rotten Flesh type of thing like the zombies have in the Overworld. But thanks for the insight otherwise!
