Ever Set a Forest on fire with your handy Dandy Flint 'n Steel?
While Watching Everything Burn is Real Fun, It seems like there should be some Bi-Product of all that burnt Wood.
Burning a Log in a furnace yields a charcoal...
So i Suggest that When Trees Burn Down, Charcoal Should drop from the Log blocks that burn.
Thats actually a good point, but it'd have to be rare, i 1-1 ratio would make it way too easy to get coal... maybe 1:16 logs burned would drop a charcoal.

It's a bit op dont ya thing?. Go to a forest biome, burn 1 tree stump, whatch hell unfold. And when evry thing is burnt, you get your free coal. Also, you can only make charcoal by coheating raw logs in a cotrolled tempurature, if i remember corectly. So a wild fire just wouldn;t do the trick. :s
Whenever someone posts a thread like this, I wonder: How the hell is this overpowered?
Let's look at it from this point of view.
To get ONE Charcoal from the Furnace, you need TWO Sticks, or ONE Wooden Plank, ONE Wood Block, and EIGHT Cobblestone.
To get it this way, you'd need ONE Flint, obtained by breaking around TEN Gravel blocks, TWO Planks, or FOUR Sticks. ONE piece of iron, smelted from ONE piece of Ore, and EIGHT Cobblestone.
Furnace Charcoal
-Wood
-Furnace
-Burning material.
-Able to obtain about 5 minutes after you spawn.
-100% chance of getting a piece.
Fire Charcoal
-Iron
-Flint
-Furnace
-Wood
-10 Gravel, recover 9
-Stone Pickaxe
-Time it takes to find Iron
-Burning material
-Takes at least 15 minutes if you're lucky
-Less than 100% chance of obtaining a charcoal.
-A good chance that the charcoal will fall into a fire, destroying it.
-Fire hurts and spreads. Say goodbye to your cabin.
-Griefers gonna grief. They'll grief even if they don't get anything out of it. Besides, there's a million Bukkit plugins to prevent that from happening.

If anything, this method is UNDERpowered.
Yes, but you can burn down an entire forest to get quick charcoal.
I dunno about it dropping coal, though I don't particularly object. I was thinking there should just be another block, a soot or ash block that attaches to the surface where something that burned used to be. Actually, both, maybe. A soot block that attaches to the UNDERSIDE of blocks over a fire, and an ash block that is left on the top of the underlying block in place of the block that burned.
Wood ash is useful for a number of things, none of which are in place in MC yet, but they could be added.

You can also chop the forest down and smelt the logs for charcoal.
Fire doesn't spread as it used to, it can't even burn down a whole tree, let along an entire forest.
Plus like I said, most of the coal would be destroyed from falling into fires.
