Even though Redstone machinery has had plethora of viable functions, I believe the power that activates pistons, doors, or anything else comes from some kind of a mysterious source that nobody can explain. It breaks the suspension of disbelief for me and I suggest the following options.
I suggest an addition of blocks and/or items that can generate an electrical current to activate redstone-powered instances. I suggest a number of things which will make the usage of Redstone more credible and challenging energy-wise.
1. A special block that creates energy out of heat (like a thermal dynamo). I suggest a block that, when placed over Lava, over Fire or over an active Furnace, activates Redstone instances.
2. A special block that creates energy when water runs through it (like a hydromatic dynamo). Placement doesn't inhibit the flow of water or lava, but doesn't activate in water that is not moving, or in any kind of lava.
3. A special block that creates energy when it is lit by a certain light level (like a solar panel).
Not only would these things make the players work for their energy, but it would also be more realistic. In reality, creating the energy we all carelessly spend from all kinds of sources, is harder than we realise. In effort to help people being more aware of the hardships of generating energy I'd like to suggest the implementation of these things.
Suggestions and founded comments are all very welcome.
Since when are extremely simple circuits a good thing?
Nonetheless, a solar panel and a torch would have the exact same effect as a redstone torch.
So would a thermal dynamo placed over lava.
Both of those things set directly next to any kind of apparatus could easily replace a redstone torch, while you don't have to waste redstone on torches but on just making the wire.
