I had this idea a while back, When I accidentally burned my house down. Why not allow fires to leave evidence of having taken place in form other than flying tree chunks. I came up with the idea of having a log that burns down have a 1/4 chance to turn into a charcoal block when destroyed, while letting wood planks have a 1/16 chance to turn into a charcoal block when destroyed. Fire ruins would look rather romantic imo.
The charcoal block can also be crafted from 4 coal or charcoal like glow-stone presently is:
Ideally charcoal blocks should also be affected by gravity to make it fall to the ground after a fire, while coal blocks should not for creative building purposes.

It's a really good idea. You should make a getsatisfaction topic about this and one at reddit too. It would be a simple update that would be awesome.
Cant we just please make the burned logs drop Charcoal?
I don't like the idea of every ore being able to be turned into a block.
Charcoal is an item. Also what's wrong with every ore being turned into a block. I've been looking for a black block better than wool for my constructions personally.

If npc villages have houses made of wood (haven't found one yet :x) I'd so burn one down as a warning to all who would oppose me >:biggrin.gif:
