The should be a type of minecraft currency. It would be iron and gold coins so a new ore would not have to be added. To make coins just craft one iron or gold ingot and get 4 iron or gold coins. Please tell me if you like this, if you do check out my other topic, trade and commerce.
Currency will probably be a factor in version 1.9.
But I'm guessing you won't be able to mint your own coinage. Instead, you'll give an NPC banker a diamond or whatever and he'll give you a certain amount of coins, which you can then spend in the village.
