I am one of those who really enjoys the building part more than anything. I have come to be disappointed with the very limited selection of building materials, and after a while, things always start to look the same. What I would like to see is a way to include a lot more different textures into the game. What I would suggest is to allow for more terrain files, such as terrain2.png, terrain3.png, terrain4.png, etc. that can be recognized by the game. These shouldn't have to be included in the game, but can be created by the player. They will have the same layout as the original file, and the textures will apply to the same blocks. The original file will be the default, but in game, I would propose that players can switch between the textures for the block they are currently holding using the + and - keys, and then place the one they want.
I think this would be a good way to give the players more freedom to express style in building without the pain of adding unneeded block types to the game.

How does it feel to be Master of the Universe? It's like wearing underpants fresh out of the dryer.
make the terrain1,2,3, etc.. then whenever you want to change them out rename them to just terrain.png and switch it out with the original? just a guess dont take my word for it lol hope this helps!

Maybe someone can make a mod that allows for more terrain.pngs
with a GUI possibly? might be worth asking modders about
I know that there is a mod that makes it so that you can change textures packs ingame...maybe with the default texture pack you can just change the blocks? Would that work?

If I understand correctly, I think what you two are saying is the normal way you use a texture pack, but I'm actually talking about something different. I don't just want to change the texture. Anyone can do that already. I want MORE textures to be available at the SAME TIME, which is why I suggest being able to switch and place the blocks individually.

There should be like an additional 128 typed blocks that can have whatever texture is desired. So these 128 are broken down into something like 32 sand-like, 32 dirt-like, 32 stone like, 32 wood-like, etcetera so you could get the features of the base type, but with lots of cool design possibilities. Maybe there could even be water-like blocks so you can have flowing colors.
These additional textures should exist in a secondary texture pack that can be changed out independently of the 'basic' MC textures.
Since MC is at least part creative game, this seems like it should be part of core minecraft - NOT a 'mod' - although modders have really helped drive mc to where it is today - hats off to all of them all!
A seperate suggestion earlier spoke of his design for biome-based blocks. It think it was MontMorticy or something to the effect. His idea relied on gradient based texture applied to the sky and blocks etc.
I feel that his suggestion was good, but I feel it would be much better implemented when combined with this system.
In effect, I feel that having multiple terrain files would allow a great deal of biome variety.
And have the system read from these various different biomes.
The only negative aspect of my perspective is that it assumes that each block from different biomes be different. dirt from plains would be id 2_01, dirt from desert would be id 2_02, etc.
The reason the above would be negative is simply because it would inflate the amount of spaces the player would need to hold.
However, for the upcoming patch, I do not believe that would be a significant issue as you can choose creative/survival in 1.8 and beyond.
Thanks for the support. I now have the perfect reason to really NEED this too. I created a texture earlier and decided to apply it to cobblestone and it looked so AMAZING where I had used cobblestone for floors. Then I was going around and I found an NPC village. Turns out the texture looks horrible as a wall. Crap. So I thought maybe I'll change it to stone blocks, but I believe those spawn as well, in strongholds, right? If I can't use anything that the game will spawn itself, and I don't want to use anything that had ANOTHER use, like wood planks or brick, etc. then I need a space for the new texture!

you totally missed the point dude.

Why have terrain.png when you can have:
plains.png
tundra.png
taiga.png
grasslands.png
desert.png
ocean.png
