Skill points, gotten from killing an enemy, builds up and does nothing as of currently. How should they work, though?
After spending a bit tossing around ideas and coming up with something that wouldn't ruin minecraft's experience.
I'll cover skill points first.
Skill points, or SP, would first be gathered by killing enemies. You will have the power skills and the upgrade skills.
Power skills have trees. Power skills have a max level of three. Each tree has a different usage. Here's some ideas for trees.
Defense Tree
Skills that are used to defend and protect.
Aggressive Tree
Skills that are used to attack and increase damage.
Stamina Tree
Skills that are used to jump, run and evade.
Prospector Tree
Skills that are used to buff mining and repair tools.
Power skills can be assigned to the hotkeys, or the item bar. Pressing the button or scrolling to it and right-clicking uses the skill.
Upgrade skills upgrade your character directly, and offer passive effects. Passive skills have a max level upgrade of 20. These would be:
Health: Player gets 1.5 more hearts each upgrade. Attack: Player does 2% more damage each upgrade. Speed: Player moves 2% faster and sprints are 5% faster each upgrade. Tool: Tool durability is drained 2% slower each upgrade.
Now for currency. Currency works like this - When you come across a village, it has a chance of having NPCs. These NPCs either do nothing, or trade with you. You cannot sell items. You can only buy items.
Well what to you buy items with? Coins. How?
The coin types are stone, iron and gold.
Coins are made by placing either cobblestone, iron or gold in one spot, and it makes coins.
Cobblestone turns into 5 stone coins.
Iron turns into 3 iron coins.
Gold turns into 1 gold coin.
You cannot use coins unless they are in your inventory. They stack to 64, and you can make coin stacks by filling the grid of the crafting table with nine coins. This makes a coin stack, which stacks to 64, and is placeable. Placing the coin stack back in the crafting table reverts back to nine coins.
What you do is right-click on the NPC, and you start a trade. You just click on the item they are selling, and it automatically stacks it in your inventory.
What if I don't fight much? How about skills the make tools last longer (or allow me to repair tools)? How about slightly more reach for mining and woodcutting? How about the chance for double drops or extra items (apples from leaves)?
The money system sounds good, but could lapus lazuli be part of the currency too? It is about as useful as gold...
I would recommend that villagers trade 1 gold coin for 10 iron, and 1 iron coin for 10 stone, or vs versa...

And that's basically it.
