The server software should have a GUI that will help you port forward, change server properties, and set up the amount of RAM you wish to give it. I think this would make it a lot easier for friends to play together while not on the same network. Of course, the server.properties file will be there as usual.

You sir are only thinking about the server software on Windows. Mac and Linux need something easy to use, with pretty buttons. Also, I just spent the last hour trying to port forward, with no avail, Thank you Frontier. The person who is running the server will have the GUI, so they would be the only one able to change the properties.
