Well this sounds like an odd complain but F doesn't work for me and I have to change my render distance manually through video settings.
My computer doesn't run Minecraft well and pre 1.8 I was constantly hitting F to change my render distance when needed, and it kept my FPS high. And even for others it would be more convenient to simply have it at F for times that are laggy.
Perhaps this was taken away to prevent the fog glitch to find dungeons, and if so there could be a moment of black screen to stop this.
Or maybe it's a glitch. Not sure but I really want F back.
its 1.8 pre release
it might be in the real 1.8 it might not but i agree i was hitting f like crazy
notch took out the fog option in the controls also :/
The reason F was removed is because for the mass majority of the community it was an annoyance. Most of us (and I do recognize that some do not) have computers that can handle being on far all the time. With the inclusion of mods (This is coming from a VoxelBox member) that add hotkeys to the game for flying and so on I found myself accidentally hitting F and having to cycle back through. I feel that for those who dont have decent enough CPUS to handle far they can simply click the mouse a few times to change it instead.

They could add a changable hotkey. They didn't have to completely remove it.
It's a sheer nuisance to constantly go to the menu because you find things that the game has trouble rendering.

The thing is, it's a bit of annoyance to go through that menu constantly when we could just press a button.
Because I had to press the button many times within a few hours of gameplay so my game wouldn't lag, just going through the menu would be a nusiance.
As for users using fly mods and accidentally pressing the F key, maybe you should change the fog hotkey.

You answered it yourself.
And before anyone asks, erm...try to hide first when trying to change the render distance in SMP?
If you DO want it though, I'm sure someone will make a mod out of it.
