I'm still not sure what experience/levels will be used for, but from what I read on the wiki the idea will be to "buy" things like higher jumping or more health. Well, that stuff's not only useful for the people who run out and slaughter every mob in sight but also those who like to mine and explore on peaceful.
Certainly breaking a block of dirt shouldn't give as much experience as vanquishing a creeper but I think it'd be nice if there were a small chance; say, 2%, that a block would drop an experience orb when you mine it by hand. (By hand so that you couldn't just make sand/gravel grinders with torches for experience.)
This way people who play on peaceful could still get the benefit of leveling up and improving their character without having to seek out fights.
sounds like an alright idea, something like that might be in the works for an update already, though i think notch would make it for ores only so like you get exp when mining coal/iron/redstone/gold/diamond rather than just normal blocks, the rarer the material the more experience you get

That definitely sounds like a good idea; so you're still encouraged to go exploring and find ores. Would also keep the incredibly, errr . . . "dedicated" players from just popping down a block, destroying it, and popping it down again. :smile.gif:
there are mobs in peaceful mode too that drop orbs. although I don't think they should...
I actually think that XP should be harder to obtain in the easier difficulties to encourage players to go as hard as they can go.

yeah but a problem i just thought of with that is gold and iron are collected in their ore forms so you could sit there and do that with them unless an item for each were created, say "raw iron" and "golden nuggets" is what you mine from those blocks and you put those into the furnace to make the ingots that way they really can't do that then
