I know the Pearl does have an effect/use already, but what I'd like something more useful, and less limited to our interactions with endermen. Give me a reason to bother keeping these stupid things.
The idea -> Ender Pearl Teleportation.
Usage:
- Player throws an Ender Pearl.
- It breaks on impact with a flat surface.
- Player is teleported to that location.
Reasons:
- Remains in-line with the Enderman's teleportation ability. (Maybe that's how they do it. We don't know.)
- Useful for quickly & safely getting down from high places (off a cliff, into a ravine..).
- One time use per pearl keeps it from getting abused, and makes them valuable. (Drop rates could also be adjusted.)
Throwing:
Throwing a revised Ender Pearl would not be like throwing a snow ball (straight), but more like a juiced up version of the item drop lob (like a grenade throw from most FPS). With an arced throw, the player would no longer need direct line of sight, but would have to aim high to get maximum distance. This makes it a bit less precise, but does open up the ability to go up with the creative use of aiming high, and jump throwing. It will never be as effective as going down, but it would be nice to have the option.
Anyhow, that's my Ender Pearl idea.
Let me know what you think.
FYI: According to the wiki the current usage of the Ender Pearl is as follows: "The Ender Pearl can be used to make Endermen teleport away from you when right-clicking on them while holding the Ender Pearl in any game mode. Endermen also become passive unless you attack them first. "
It's very possible I will never see this thread again, unless you quote me. If you need me to see something, quote me on it.
Hey, hey you.
You know that plus button over there?
Yeah, the one above the MultiQuote thing.
If I made you laugh or was helpful or I'm just awesome like that, press it.
It will make me happy, therefore making me spend more time here on Minecraft Forums, therefore making me spread my awesomeness around, therefore making everyone admire it, therefore making everyone want to be awesome like me, therefore everyone being nicer and not using bad language, therefore becoming thus when they speak to those around them, therefore changing the lives of those around them, therefore making those around them admire them and want to be more like them, therefore making those around those on the forums become more like said forum-readers, therefore changing the world into a better one, therefore pleasing everyone, and preventing wars, therefore creating less pollution from weapon factories, therefore stopping the holes that are forming in the world's ozone layer, therefore making sure the planet doesn't overheat, therefore preserving mankind on this planet, THEREFORE MAKING EVERYONE AS AWESOME AS ME/YOU AFTER YOU READ THIS.
And, now that you read this, you are as awesome as me, and have BEGUN THE PROCESS.
YOU HAVE JUST CONTRIBUTED TO THE SUCCESS OF THE HUMAN RACE. You rock.

I really like this idea. It could really be used to get out of a sticky situation with a spider or off a tall ledge.
IMO More useful than the current "knock back" teleport that only works on Endermen. You know what they do when you teleport them away from you? They teleport right back towards you. It buys you little to no time, you gain no advantage. It's just a gimmicky toy right now.
I've been throwing them out, and because we so rarely get a new item, I wish I had a reason not too.
If anything, Endermen should also be bumped up from their current state to something a little deadlier. As of now they are easy to kill and they weren't worth the excessive hype. They are pretty bad right now and not even close to scary;adding this would make them like endangered pandas. People would hunt and kill them nonstop for these cool items. They should be a bit stronger and silent (As to be hard to find) to make these items more worthwhile, and to keep Endermen cool.
But even without an Endermen buff this is by far the best idea I've read here, ever. ( sadly, this doesn't say much with the seven year olds around, though)

I'll also update the OP
So what do you think...
Straight snowball-like throw? (precise, limited to going down, requires line of sight)
An arced (FPS grenade) throw? (less precise, could be used to go up, or over obstacles).
I think it might be a little overpowered to let people teleport anywhere. They could break the security of a lot of buildings in SMP.
What if instead you could craft 9 pearls into a glowing green Ender Pearl Block? Then if you throw a pearl close enough to that block you teleport to it.
That allows short range teleportation, but requires people to set the points that are permissible to teleport to.
Or alternatively, a jack-o-lantern should block all teleportation in a wide radius to give people a way of making their homes (or challenge maps) teleport free.
I like it, but it wouldn't be too good for going down (you might throw it into a creeper that was 100 meters away).
Also, if it hit lava too deep to go down, would you appear where it hit the lava, or would you lose it for nothing? What about throwing it in water? Would you appear at the surface or on the sea floor?

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
I really like this and it works well with the ideas I have for territories if anybody ever looks at them. The biggest complaint that I'd have with this is the ability to bypass some security in SMP, but if a territories-like system ever gets implemented it would be possible for the owner of an area to block teleportation for people to prevent them from teleporting in.

I think that that would be a completely awesome use for them, and it would be perfectly fair, so long as drop rates were adjusted like you mentioned.
*Turns away from computer* HEY! Hey Notch! You! Yes, with the hat! ADD THIS TO !.8!
*NOTCH* But... September 12th! That's Monday!
WELL ADD IT ANYWAYS.
It really is really cool.

I REALLY wish I knew why people like you find that kind of thing funny...
Lol, that's so sick, do you imagine a 11 year-old asking his father: "Hey, dad, what are anal beads used for? Are they magical?"
LOL at Charades picture!!!
Because people like me have a sense of humor and know when to lighten up.
Just look at your own signature.

I don't need to explain a thing.
Sorry it's off topic, BTW...
I know, just putting it out there anyhow.
