Now, I was exploring the 1.8 pre-beta and came across one of these. Followed by another, and again by another smaller one.
They are nothing new, in fact it's highly likely to find one first day. I'm talking about Stone Plateaus, how I call them, or to be exact, large above-ground, flat pieces of the world that are made almost entirely of stone, possibly a little gravel, and maybe some coal or iron (if you're lucky.) They can be found almost anywhere, including on mountains, by the sea, or in the desert. But, the one I found was so large, almost a quarter the size of a pre-1.8 biome, it got me thinking;
Are these built into the game?
If not, can they be put it?
You see, there is a huge problem around all of Minecraft: Lack of natural flat land (without anything such as trees, grass, mushrooms, or flowers) The way I see it, if this could be added to naturally spawn at a slightly higher elevation, like a hill, with it simply being a flat stone surface, it could provide excellent locations for building towers, houses, or even quarries.
But first and foremost, is this just a huge coincidence that these structures occur so often for me, or is this already in the game, as a feature I have not located yet?
--Map of a "Stone Plateau". Crosshairs are on the Plateau. Two smaller ones can be seen near the upper left/right (the small grey squares surrounded by the green)--
Features of the suggestion
Flat
Solid Stone
Slightly elevated, say 3-4 blocks?
About 16-20 blocks across. This should be more then enough room to build with.
Rounded. It looks better then custom-built square platforms some people building, myself included. :mellow.gif:
Can generate in almost any biome, and at any altitude.
Not technically a biome, a "mini-biome" as in a small section inside the normal biome.
So far, I see nothing wrong with this suggestion. I think it'd be very useful in construction.

i have had one of these in 1.7.3 as well it was very convenient for mining, i think this is a good idea, but i think they might be placed on a fairly flat hill.
Not a bad idea. I kinda like the idea of sub-biomes. (Or mini-biomes as you choose to call them.) Maybe these plateaus could also be a part of a mountain biome, forming things like sheer, flat cliffs or the like. I'm all for adding more geography to Minecraft in any way, though.
Instead of making a new form of biome, why not use existing biomes and implement randomly generating plateaus? Similar to abandoned mineshafts or strongholds but on a far greater scale.
Hence the term "mini" or "sub" biome.
