Pumpkin seeds should also be obtainable by making a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern, instead of just in abandoned mine shafts.
That won't work. Pumpkin farming is rare on purpose, but you can't farm it forever because the pumpkins don't give you seeds. If a normal pumpkin gave you seeds, it would lose it's rarity. If the pumpkin vine gave you seeds, that would be a different story!

Melon farming is infinitely doable, and they have more use than pumpkins.

I know that. Pumpkins are rare ON PURPOSE. Go complain to Notch if you want pumpkins as common as tall grass, but it's not happening. If pumpkin = seeds, and seeds = pumpkins, then you could infinitely farm pumpkins, decreasing there rarity (bad). If the vine dropped seeds, than dungeon = seeds, seeds = vine and pumpkins, and vine = seeds (good, you still need a dungeon!)

I don't want them to be as common as tall grass, but then again, I don't see a need to make melons infinitely renewable but pumpkins not!
Because having 1 pumpkin give you infinite pumpkins will decrease it's rarity.
Having 1 melon, having 1 wheat, 1 sugarcane, cactus... Listen, if melons are meant to be common, why are the seeds only found in abandoned mine shafts?

Because you can get them infinitely.

And abandoned mine shafts are not too common.
I JUST started playing the pre-release and I've found 2.
And I've been exploring in 3 different directions and found none.
