I was surprised to not see this topic on the already-posted list or in a cursory search of the forum.
What I would like to see is the Minecraft server (or something like bravo perhaps) modified such that players (and mobs, and whatever else) can move from one server to the next simply by walking across some arbitrary lines. If you are familiar with how cell phones work, that's the model I believe will work well.
A proxy server could redirect communications based on three-dimensional locations. In addition to allowing for arbitrary expansion along the XZ plane, this approach would allow for increased map height (my number-one desired feature) by switching users to new servers every time they cross a 128-block Y limit. But this is at best a hack.
I would much rather see the Minecraft protocol extended to allow for servers to exchange chunks (so what you see of server B from server A is accurate even when it changes on that server) as well as facilitating exchange of player information and instructing clients to switch to another server. Servers would need to have global location settings and would also need to register with each other or a higher authority in order to know their neighbors.
Done right, the user never need know what's happening behind the scenes. Clients would continue to use a single hostname or address to connect to the multi-server environment -- if the server to which they originally connect does not contain their player, that server can transfer their connection.
so kind of like how the creative servers were with having multiple worlds and you just went through portals
Kinda, but I'm hoping it'll be completely transparent to the user -- they shouldn't even know there are multiple servers, they just run around and mine and build like crazy people.

What do you all think?

I think this would be great for servers
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
