Okay with 1.8 coming out with food acting like a hot (Heal over Time) that does a tick every few seconds. Thats all fine and dandy but. What if we get into a bind. We'll have to wait to heal before we can go off and do whatever it is we're doing. Now what can be added to the game is something added to the game would greatly increase survival situations where every tick counts. Now I've suggested potions be like a instant healing object. That was kinda overpowered in very many ways. Well Maybe there could be 3 potions added to the game that will give you another HoT(Heal over Time) Thats just slightly faster and better than the one you get now. Lets say you could make them out of stuff you can find that's not commonly found such as mushrooms will be the base of the potion and like other harder to get items. such as slime balls, wheat, golden apples, diamond, redstone dust, nether rack, soul sand, ect. These can be used for ingredients for potions that would give you a seperate but faster tick that would heal you depending on the level of potion. Like the first level will heal you half a heart each tick that will last x amount of time while the next level will heal a full heart after x amount of time for an x amount of time and the best one will heal heart and a half for after an x amount of time for this x amount of time. And it should be implemented that none of these will stack and they can't be used back to back. Saying you can't drink the same tier of potion after you just drunk one.
u make them out of clith and string and you have a progress bar. it heals only if youre below 5 hearts and only heals up to 5?

... you do know band aids are ment to stop bleeding. And potions add a hole new window of cool new things that could be added to the game.
