I've seen a number of posts advocating for an "auto replace" feature for an expended item in the quick bar and suggesting several ideas for accomplishing this including designating certain slots for item types or a "double tap" replenishment. The simplest idea, which I've not seen (though admittedly I may simply have missed it rather than it never having been proposed - if so than my apologies) is to have the inventory bar "gravity fed", meaning that whenever an item bar slot becomes vacant (through using up a block, breaking a tool, eating food, etc.) the next item stored above that slot in the main inventory falls into the newly-vacant slot in the quick bar.

FUUUUUUUU
That is the only problem I see with this idea. Maybe only if a like item is in the slot above it?

That could potentially be a problem, but I had assumed one would choose to place the items one wishes to auto-replace into the inventory slots above - picks above picks, logs above logs, etc. - in order to avoid such calamity.
I did forget to mention that I believe such a feature should be a toggleable selection in the options screen.
Options are good. This fixes my sole problem with the idea.
And to the OP: Never underestimate the stupidity of most people. Even if this is an option that is turned off by default someone (read: at least 100 people) will still manage to make the mistake I mentioned above and complain about how it's awful and Minecraft is now terrible because of it.

Well, let the stupid be stupid.
Anyways, yeah, I see no reason to not add this. Would help for me because I always put tools over tools anyways.

Taking trolling to a whole new level, one post at a time.

So do I. That was more of a personal message in regards to the sadder half of the human race.
