Now as everyone knows 1.8 is coming out and it is claimed to make everything seem more adventurous. I have taken a look and i just believe its a huge update. Heres what i think Notch should add so that it lives up to its name.
Spikes Function: Is used to create a one block high 'barbed wire'. This would help ward out enemies and especially enderman. When enderman are teleporting towards you these spikes could catch endermen in their tracks even if they are teleporting towards you. How to craft: Three iron bars that create an arrow pointing up ^ (almost like an upside down bucket. How this could contribute to 1.8: It could help players trap enderman.
Spiky pistons. Function: When the piston is activated it will break any object that is infront of it(besides obsidian and bedrock) and hurt players that are in front of it or players that get to close to the front when it is activated. Also this would add a new interesting redstone object that players could experiment with. How to craft: Spikes on top of a sticky piston. How this could contribute to 1.8: In the strongholds players could experience some areas where there are spiky pistons which could prove to be an interesting obsticale if it keeps on repeating. This would make the player feel more like Indiana Jones.
A scary escape from a stronghold. How this event would be triggered: When the player opens up the iron door to get to the treasure room at the end of the stronghold. What will happen: Lava will start poring from hidden areas in the cealing and some blocks on the ceiling would get destroyed allowing gravel and sand to fall ontop of the player. How this cannot get avoided: Some of the blocks would be obsidian which means it would be very hard to avoid the catastrophe from starting or from escaping.
Village recruitments. Theory:Since villages are going to be rare and hard to find why not the player be able to enter these towns and be able to recruit villagers and bring them back to the player's town which could soon develop into an empire. What the player could do with the villagers: The player could be able to take villagers and select areas for them to roam around in and for them to defend. The player could also give weapons and armor to these villagers making them into a gaurd and in another update turn them into an army which the player could command. How to get more villagers: Villagers dont grow on trees or do they? To get more villagers the player could feed the villagers food which gives the villagers a 1 in 15 shot of creating a new villager. How this could contribute to 1.8: since the rarity of towns have been announced it would give players incentive to go out and find villagers. This would lead to players traveling far and wide for towns to help supplement the player's empire.
In another update. Maybe the map could be used to help command the player's armies and to help manage the player's empire.
These are suggestions to help make 1.8 feel even more adventurous
I was first thinking when you said "villagers recruit" I was thinking "No, that shouldn't happen" but after reading it, I kinda warmed up to the idea, but I don't like the feeding villagers to make new ones, I think the villagers should be definable as male or female, and if you have one of each gender, there could be a chance of a new one appearing every now and again. Also, the villagers should be able to feed themselves if they're hungry or injured. I really like the idea of dungeon escapes.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
pretty awesome, but the adventure update hasn't come out yet.
How would we know what it needs. It may have some thing similar or a feature to subdue the same purpose.
I personally think that 1.8 should be called the creepy/creative mode update. All of the things that Notch said that would be added to me feels like fixs or half ideas that arent fully in. And additions to the game that dont exactly make you want to feel adventurous. I never played 1.8 but from looking at it my personal opinion is just that it wont play out as well as Notch intended 1.8 to be.

Thank you. Well i did consider male or female idea but a few things came to mind. First Notch hasnt made a female model yet with sound effects for female players. So that would first have to be made and #2 there are very young kids on Minecraft and going out and finding food requires more adventure than placing a male and a female in the same area.
Yea i do believe they should be able to feed themselves. So i dont know what the middle ground is for the reproducing part.
Also there should be a increased gravity piston. Idk what it would be made out of but any block that is above the piston no matter if its touching it or now would be pulled towards the piston's top.
