right now with the tiny things we have, i can not call them boats at all, and with new ocean biome code i figured that this would be a good time for this suggestion.
here is how it would work, you build a boat useing any blocks that you want and any blocks placed above the water wouldnt sink under water when it becomes a boat. and at least one block has to be placed above water. to make it into a boat you would need redstone to craft a propeller and than some other blocks and a compass to make a controll pannel, you than wire the redstone to a redstone torch or something for power and make the propeller and controll pannel connect, than you get rid of any blocks connection the boat to land and than with the controller chose to turn the blocks into a boat and BAM you have a controllable boat!
note the more blocks you put on the more propellers you would need to hook up so it would go like this
You've thought this idea out and I applaud that it would be a good addition to Minecraft vanilla and Notch should consider adding better boats.
thank you, I just thought with bigger oceans comeing in 1.8 it would be a pretty good idea to have so that while you are traveling you can walk around a boat some of the time and not be stuck on a pretty small excues for boats
maby moe people would be interested in this once they got their hands on the 1.8 oceans since they are supposed to be huge compared to right now and it would be pretty boreing traveling in a tiny sad excues for a boat
This is an epic win, but I have to ask, what about seats? Would you craft them? Control Panels also don't seem to fit in Minecraft. Just sitting and controlling the boat from your seat seems fine though. Wouldn't all those blocks moving at once create pooploads of lag?

well with a controll pannel it's not going to be something high tech like in a navy sub, it would in my vision be a grey stone block with a compass on top and useing the arrows you can move the needle left or right and by pushing the up arror on your keyboard would make the needle stretch out and the boat would go faster. so thats what the controll pannel would be really
as for blocks moveing at the same time i am not sure, but complicated redstone stuff like a computer can be pulled off with little or no lag at all, pluss stuff that uses a lot of pistons. realistically i am not a computer programer so i cant really make any big assumptions here but in a good guess i would say that the way they would code it in could cause or not cause lag with the blocks. sorry if i cant give a clear answer

1= 25 blocks
2= 50 blocks
3= 75 blocks
4= 100 blocks
5= 125
6= 150
7= 175
8= 200
UPDATE: you would be able to place crafting tables, beds, paintings excetera on the boat, however each one counts as 1 block
what do you think?

if you support the idea post
thank you

hey, if you see videos of the zepplin mod, you would see that my idea is very pratical codeing wise
