With the upcoming addition of experience points, and the addition of "more dynamic" mob-to-mob interaction, I've been thinking that tamed wolves could be greatly improved and made a much more interesting element of the game if they too could receive experience points.
I imagine it could work as such: for each mob your tamed wolf hunts down, it receives a pre determined amount of EXP points. These amounts would vary depending on the mob that is killed, and if there are multiple wolves in your pack, the experience points would be divided equally amongst the entire pack. These points would be different from player EXP points and thus could only be picked up by wolves. EXP points could provide gradual stat boosts to your wolves in the form of greater hunting speed, more powerful attacks, more health/better resistance to damage, or specialty abilities not yet implemented.
I feel like the addition of wolves was a step in the right direction, but they need depth to keep them from becoming just a novelty that most players will ignore. If they can be improved to become a useful tool for exploration and adventure (that's what these updates are about right?), I think the overall gameplay experience would benefit.
TL;DR: EXP points for mobs hunted down by tamed wolves
EXP points would provide stat boosts for tamed wolves
Would provide depth for tamed animal feature
Let me know what you think about this. and sorry if this was suggested already, there are almost 1500 pages of suggestions, it's easy to miss some occasionally

I think it would be too much work to put into 1.8, because theres only about 4 days left, but maybe in 1.9 or 2.0!
