So with my other idea (glue) Reverse Pistons would be perfect. How do they work? Instead of pushing a block the piston pushes itself back one space (putting it in an extended state) and then pulls the block in front of it back one space. This would mean of course that all Reverse Pistons would be sticky.
I didn't see an emoticon for the piston so I used cobblestone to represent the piston and the arrow to represent the piston's extended arm.
Now why would this be so cool? Well because combined with my other idea, glue, this would allow you to make a structure that can move itself, effectively a vehicle. This opens up a lot of exciting options, archer towers to assault castles, "drivable" cannons, complex mazes, towers that move across the map with the flip of a switch. That's just to name a few that I thought of just now.
The downfalls of Reverse Pistons? They can't move blocks behind them.
So this (the piston once again represented by cobblestone) would not work because the grass block on the right is preventing the piston from moving. This means they can't move up hill.
They could also be affected by gravity so that they can't move structures downhill or in mid air.
The 12 block limit still applies.
How would the 12 block limit apply when combined with glue? It counts towards the structures total block count to prevent abuse. This means that if you have a structure that is 4 x 4 x 4 (16 total blocks) you would need at least 2 Reverse Pistons to move that structure. This also means that is your structure had one block on bottom and 119 on top of that one block you would still need 10 pistons to move the entire structure, not one. So the larger your structure the more pistons you need. This should prevent abuse when combined with glue.
I have no idea how to make these things myself, thus I have no idea how complex it might be. While my solution to glue + pistons sounds simple to me I really don't know if it's even possible. Hopefully someone with the proper know-how will make these two things (Reverse Pistons and Glue) because has you might imagine it will open up many new avenues of creation.
And moving buildings wont work -.-
It will take alot of computer power, and would lagg alot.
You place the redstone inside the structure that it's moving. Such has placing the piston then place a block of dirt in front of it and placing a redstone torch on top of the block of dirt. Has the piston moves so does it's power source.
Yes it would lag tons with large structures, I can't really think of a good solution other than using small structures.
