With the advent of the 1.8 update, a great game will be made even greater. Adventure mode is the reason why many people I know as well as myself purchased and support this game. We love to explore, build, compete and try to survive in the wilds. NPC villages and the additional geography will certainly make exploring in the game more interesting, however, my friends and I feel that there is still a definitive lack of purpose to venturing forth outside the immediate surroundings of a spawn point. The game is perfect as a sandbox, but I feel that Notch meant more with the adventure mode, than squatting on a mountain and mining and building. The problem is that all the minerals and rare items can always be found anywhere. Dig straight down right next to the spawn point and you will find iron, gold, diamonds and enough redstone to power a city. What we need is a mineral/ore/gem so rare that we need to hunt for it. Discussing internally we came to the following conclusions:
Magnetite: Obviously, this would be a complex addition to the game so please bear with me and adjust feasibility based on realistic applications. Magnets would naturally pull things together over an increasingly large area depending on the number of magnetite blocks lumped together. For example: One magnetite block can attract another block one square away. 4 blocks would pull at a 2 block distance and 8 blocks would pull at a 4 distance (etc.) With an active Redstone torch, the polarity of the magnetite would reverse, thus causing a repulsion. Magnetite would attract iron blocks, but not gold.
Applications: Elevators, traps, hovering things, sliding stone doors.
Adamantium: The name is widely known and probably trademarked to Marvel, so feel free to use Titanium or etc. This block would be indestructible to anything but a titanium pick-axe (which only can be obtained from ore found in the most dangerous dungeons). Armor would never decay and provide the same protections as diamond. Tools can be used nearly indefinitely, which would be that much more anger-inducing when or if you fall in lava (it would still melt).
Applications: Weapons, Armor, tools, building creeper-proof structures, bragging rights.
Marble: The only purpose of marble would be to make another texture building block. Marble should come in multiple colors including White, light-gray, dark-grey, and black(ish).
Applications: Being able to build more colorful buildings without using wool.
Ivy: This is a plant that would be placed next to a vertical wall and would grow up the sides stopping at the peak of the ledge. This plant can then be climbed, and also can be burned when ignited.
Applications: Creating Ambient environments, or interesting access to cliff-side caves.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to take a look at my suggestions. I look forward to hearing the communities opinions!
I stopped reading once I saw you wrote adventure mode.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
