It would be cool to write in books, with a max of like ten pages. You would hold the book like you would a map, then look down at the words someone wrote in the book, right-clicking to turn the pages. As for the construction of this book, it would be cool to have to build a desk, maybe like an upside down boat in the workbench. Then, right-clicking on the desk, you would be presented a screen similar to the furnace. It could have three slots: one for an ink sac, a feather (to be used as a quill), and, of course, a book. Then, once all are in place, it would display a page for you to write on, changing pages (1-10) as you keep writing. When satisfied with what you have written, you click a box under the three slots and began the actual writing process, your character animation mimicking this, with a bar that progresses for a couple seconds, similar to when something is smelting (though you won't be able to walk away, heh). What you guys think?

well, i think that you just need a feather, stick and an ink sac, and you have a pen. you can hold a book in your hand, and right click while holding it. you open a screen like the one when writing on a sign. You cannot write without having a pen in your inventory. and you use the left and right arrows to change pages. Depening on how many pages you are writing, you can add as many papers as you want by having them in your inventory

Yes, the simpler the better. It would be a nuisance to have to make a desk every time you wanted to write in a book and were away from home.

add a desk to the topic in my sig and it would be perfect also 10 pages not enough
Did the author of this thread specify how much exactly we could write on each page? Plus, I think if anything it'd be interesting when writing books to encourage part 1 and part 2 to a book, a series if you will.

Just a thought I threw out there, and I know there are others who have proposed similar ones, so, of course, all ideas to improve and simplify my thought are much welcome. I would say, yes, the simpler the better, so long as it retains the "feeling" you are actually writing in this book and not just adding a simple phrase, like you would with a sign. I, also, don't like the idea that when you write in a book you automatically become the author of the book. It should have no declared author when you select the book, and you instead have to actually open to the first page to see who wrote the book (if the author even chooses to put his name in it). This way, fake books could be constructed, by made up authors. As for the number of pages, it should be limited to something smaller, like 25, which is even a lot, this way, like you have said, you would have to make different volumes, and it wouldn't deter people from reading. This game is a simple representation of life, not an actual one. If you want to write a 300 page book, just do it in real life.
As for how it would work with bookshelves, I don't know. It would be awesome if bookshelves actually had no books in them when created. That way you would have to find books and even create some to fill your shelves with. It would also look like your shelves were filled with actual size books, like the ones in a player's inventory, and not just texture ones. Then you just grab the book you want from a shelf (by right-clicking), which could hold up to 3 books let's say, and read away, putting it back when your done, or even attempting to steal one from a neighbor. If one is too lazy to fill their shelves with their own written books, then they could just fill it with empty ones. Or, it would be awesome if Notch and his team were to make up fake books, of minecraft history and lore, on a regular basis, then upload them with every update, to be found in the homes of NPC's or even dungeons. They could even have players submit their own books to Notch and his team, which would then be inspected and added if they see fit. The rarer the book, the better you will either have to hide it or the prouder you will be to have it upon your bookshelf.
How about writing in a book by right-clicking on a pressure plate on a fence, like those in NPC villages.
You could craft either a pencil or a pen. Pen changes are permanent after you're done writing. Pencil changes, not so much!
You should be able to color pens and pencils with dye to make colored text.
Also, bookshelves should be left as is. There should be separate craft-able shelves that could hold any items, like a chest, but have less space and allow people to actually see the items on the shelf.

Curse PremiumKind of like this. I like this idea too:
