Now that Mojang has announced updated combat, I'd like to introduce a new idea to make combat a bit more fun!
Special Attacks
An idea in which walking in a certain direction while attacking will have a slight chance to perform a "special attack", each tool having a unique attack. This would make battles more exciting.
Shovel Slam
Dashing and attacking with a Shovel in hand will slightly damage the opponent, and well as stunning it for 5 seconds, making it walk around aimlessly, still able to attack.
Pickaxe Purge
Moving backwards and attacking with a Pickaxe will cause you pull your arm backwards, and throw the pick, causing decent damage. Upon death, the opponent will drop the pick, allowing you to recover it.
Hoe Hoedown
Dashing forward with a Hoe will give you the chance to swipe at the opponent's feet, causing the opponent to fall, it receiving slight damage, a slight knockback, and a 3 second stun. Unlike the shovel, the opponent will be unable to attack.
Questions You Might Have
Q: I could just keep all my tools in my hotbar, it won't be exciting.
A: True. That is why I also suggest that the player could only have 2 tools in his hotbar at a time. You'd have to go into inventory to switch items if you already have two in the hotbar.
Q: Wouldn't this take a lot of time to create the animations?
A: Yes, but Team Mojang could create animations for eating and the bow for the 1.8 Update, I think they could make animations for this if they put their minds to it.
Q: Why did you not devise an attack for the sword?
A: The sword is powerful on it's own already, and even more powerful once Dash Crits. are in.
Eh, I'd rather be able to have all my tools out at once and not have this than have only 2 tools out at a time and have this.

I like the 2 tools thing as long as swords and bows are not included as tools.
Bow is not affected, but I'm afraid the Sword is. If you were to have a Sword, you wouldn't need any of these. The beauty of this is using tools as makeshift weapons when unexpectedly put in battle.

The flaw of combat in Minecraft is that if you have a sword and bow on hand, you're all set, there is no excitement in battles. But imagine being on a mining operation, and accidently falling into a cave system, and then being gave chase by two Zombies. If you have two Picks, you could chuck them at the zombies(though it wouldn't be the best tactic). With a Hoe, you could stun the Zombies in one go, run away, and they'd lose interest in you. Tactics in battle change based on what you have on you.
