I think that you should be able to find/make a sort of currency and buy and sell items to NPC if you cannot find any of whatever you need. I think that each merchant should have different items also, each item should have a set price and items in better condition should sell better. Like you could sell 15/20 Iron Swords to get enough currency for a Diamond Pickaxe.
Whoa, YES! Before 1.8 was close to around the corner, I thought of this as a good idea for multiplayer, but it would have no use in singleplayer. Now it will!
How about 1 gold ingot = 5 gold coins? Seems fair to me, plus it will give a new use to gold.
A Pigman is wandering with a thought bubble above his head that has an Iron Sword in it.
In his hands, however, he holds a gold ingot.
Right clicking the Pigman with an Iron Sword will cause him to take the sword, drop the gold, and the thought bubble would go away.
He would nod and walk away.
I used Iron Sword and Gold Ingot as examples, he could have anything and ask for anything.
You could get some stupid asking trades, like wanting a diamond for a wood plank, but you could also get some good ones like wanting a wood plank for his iron sword.
