As u have probably heard, arrows will stick into mobs in 1.8, or 1.9. However, i think that if it hits a piece of armor on a player, it won't stick, unless it's leather.
It will also only damage the armor, not the person, and won't wont make the person fly backwards unless it was a fully charged bow (another addition to 1.8). Even then it will be minimal. It will only hurt the armor hit.
Arrows should do lots of damage to leather, because arrows can puncture it. Also, with leather armor, arrows will slightly hurt the player.
Thats a good idea but i dont think notch would be up to all the coding that involves that. plus armors can change from tex pack to fit different parts so that wont work.

Texture packs would have to modify, yes, but really, it only matters for leather, and most accessories are puncturable (i know, not a word)anyway.
I don't think that the player should have multiple hitboxes for arrow contact, as that pointlessly complicates the issue.
The way the current armor system works is fine.
Does is seem "fine" that arrows would puncture diamond? It is "fine" but fine isn't good enough for Notch. Why else would he even make a new arrow mechanism?
Also, if lag is a concern, you would probably be able to turn it off (kinda like graphics).
