I've been thinking and looking around in the topics here but I couldn't find anything like this so I wanted to propose this: Coloured Water made by adding a dye to a bucket of water.
Now I know that for something to be good it needs to be useful so I gave it a thought how would coloured water be useful. Well for one it will look quite nicely. For second it will be perfect for fairy-tale or magical themed constructs for it can be used as made-belief potions.
Coloured water can also be used for making "factories" which have all sorts of widgets made with pistons periodically switching coloured streams on and off.
For common sense when coloured water is placed in a body of normal water in a few seconds it should loose its colour and turn blue again.
I'm sure that people will think of better ways to use coloured water :tongue.gif: Personally I'd love seeing this ingame.
Edit: To address the "more textures will be required for the water and buckets" issue:
Well I thought about this and I think it can be bypassed easily just like the Sheep's wool. While on the sheep it can have different colours without having a different texture. I gather the same method can be done for water (being the new default) and when the colour overlay is done it will still be as transparent as normal water, just the colour would be new.
Regarding the buckets, I am not sure if this can work but if not I am sure that Notch can come up with a simple solution (like the -1000lines for biome code replaced by 10 symbols) xD
Also I thought that the bucket issue can be bypassed if glass vials are introduced to go with the coloured water. They could use the same method as the sheep's wool or will require for many vial items to be made but they can be copy-pasted textures with a white label (could have a symbol for the different colour as flavour if the texture artist or Notch sees as a good idea). The vials would be a nice addition to the potion idea and would be easier to determine what colour water they hold.
I like your idea, however, think about the problems that can happen with your idea.
The water has to flow the same color, but it can't be a solid color, it has to have multiple shades, etc. That means all those colors that are used for wool, have to be put into solitary water, buckets of water, and FLOWING water. That includes all of the ways water takes on forms as it shapes around objects as well.. I'm not saying your idea is bad, but it would be difficult for colored water. Of course, I support it, so I give you two thumbs up.

I just found something interesting. There is a water gradient png in-game which would make the coloured water idea even easier to make. Apparently the water gradient is used for the different biomes just like the biome gradients are used.

Also, you would only need to have an additional 45 items (15 new buckets, still blocks, and flowing blocks).
Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
