These plants listed above would make somewhat good contributions to Minecraft in their own way, but which is the best? ALSO: List your ideas, As I have NO imagination!
They are already adding ivy, I think berries would be good though. It would be a quick easy food to collect, it would help quite a bit with the exploration when the hunger meter is added.
Apple trees! Why not? I mean, we already have apples but there isn't a practical way to get them. All Notch would even have to do is copy and paste the code for one of the other trees, modify the textures with some red circles in the leaves, and then add apples to the drops list with a rarity about equal to saplings.

I think the reason no one really thinks of apple trees is because it's in dungeons, and is seen as a "forbidden fruit" of sorts. As in, it's in a dungeon, the zombies want it, and they don't like to share.

I was told I could be whatever I wanted when I grew up, so I became a god.
Apple Trees - a source for apples and native to biomes with a moderate to high temperature, and moderate to high humidity/rainfall, may have an extremely rare chance of dropping a gold apple instead of a normal one. Also a source for wood.
Coconut Palms - grow on sand in tropical biomes (high temperature, high humidity/rainfall). Source for coconuts. Can be used as food, makeshift wooden bowls, or thrown as short-range weapon kinda like snowballs. Also a source of palm wood.
Date Palms - grow on sand in arid biomes (high temp, low humidity/rainfall). Source for edible dates, which have been a food staple in the Middle East since ancient times. Could also be a source for palm wood.
Aloe Vera - grows on sand or dirt in airid biomes. Valued for medicinal properties. Could be used in healing and/or antidotes.
Rice - grows in dirt in 1m deep water. Mature rice plants reach 2m in height (1m block above the shallow water level). Have a growth pattern similar to wheat, with 8 stages of growth total. When a mature rice plant is harvested, it yields both rice and rice seeds. (we all know that rice is a grain, but we get wheat, and wheat seeds in the game, so to make it simple and similar, we can have rice and rice seeds).
Bamboo - grows in a manner similar to sugar cane, but does not need to be next to water, and can grow taller. Can be found in forests, rainforests, and seasonal forests. Bamboo could be used as a substitute for sticks in crafting. Arranging 9 bamboo on a crafting grid would yield a bamboo block for building.
It's possibly the normal one, but it's not really specified, so...this would be a more distinguished tree then the normally spawned one

Use mods if you want berries.
