I know this may be a fairly common idea, but please be nice and don't call me retarded for posting it again. The idea is to make a practical use for those amazing pirate ships people make in both SMP and SSP. Obviously, they're amzing to look at, but imagine making a cruise liner that sails around the server showing people things. The idea is that you make an engine/sails that would define a ship, then you would build around them and just build a cool pirate ship/yacht/whatever and that would become a ship. Then you would place a steering wheel/something else and right-clicking it would allow you to become the captain of the ship, moving it like you would a normal, existing boat.I was also thinking that there would be a weight limit and diverse levels of engines, each with more power, and ultimately, higher weight cpacity. Every block/type of block would have its own weight value from 1-10, with things like stone being closer to 8-10 and wood and such being more like 1-3. Multiple engines to a boat would stack in effect, but if a ship goes over its weight limit, it will sink/not move no matter what. There would be no speed effect on the boat, but maybe it would increase the start up time? If the weight limit is exceeded, then the start up time will become infinite and thus the boat will never start. The difference between this and those puny boats that exist now is huge. First off, these would hold many people, though only one person would pilot. They would also be fully customizable. And since this is such a huge jump in what currently exists in minecraft, I want to hear what everyone thinks! Comments, concerns, suggestions, all are welcome. And please vote in the poll too.
Hmm, you missed the only improvement I want to see... BIGGER boats.
I'd love to see something where you craft 8 boats and a redstone block to make a larger boat, one that you could also place blocks in. Heck, if the option for three boats was possible, I'd like to see a longboat or dragon boat (think vikings).

No, the whole point of this was that those cool, BIG, pirate ships people make could actually move. Blocks would need to be placed in them or it would just, you know, not exist. Its really just for mobile custom ships. And engines would be the 8 boats+redstone thing.
This sounds great ! super ideas but if you think like that with very thing in minecraft there could be added ALOT of new stuff to every items, i suggest u make more threats like this one :biggrin.gif:

What I'd like to see is some kind of Cargo Boat, like there is a Cargo minecart.
People could then make greater use of waterways/Aqueducts.
I'd also like to be able to pick my boat up like minecarts, and have them a hell of alot stronger than they are atm.
The kind of Boats that you are suggesting aren't boats but Ships which would need to have massive oceans on a map in order to use them.
Great Idea but I'd like the current boat to be upgraded to stronger types with an option for Storage and be able to pick them up to carry to the next bit of water you get to.
Gargo.
These would be huge boats, so you could just place chests on them. Something else I thought of would be that the boats would float with the current, unless an anchor of some kind was dropped. Therefor, with some clever engineering, you would make an automatic dock that would send a boat along to a place where the chests would be unloaded. Also, many people have been asking to make the oceans more intresting/useful, and a giant pirate/viking/naval ship that sails the seven seas would be a fun way to do that. Again, these would be huge ships, so they would be stronger and even though you could not pick them up, it would make waterways more comman and more useful/fun/not pointless.
OK, crazy idea...
What if you could change a boat block into a float block.
You can place float blocks next to eachother, and they stick, but they don't stick to other blocks below or next to them. Other blocks can be placed above them and will stick, so you can build any sort of structure you want. Float blocks can only be placed on water, and so your ship size will be limited by your "drydock." Float blocks move freely on water, and can be steered like boats, but don't move over land and stop when you hit land (like boats).
If you place float blocks on different levels (example below), the highest float block drops to the water level, so you can build hulls that look normal.
End view of sample ship:
\or/=Float Block X=other blocks W=Water -=Air (since this [email protected]#$% forum deletes spaces)
Remove fragility from boats. It's stupid and annoying having a boat self-destruct when coming up on a beach. It's a flat bottomed craft built to run aground on a regular basis with little wear and tear. Moreso stopping a square from a beach, waiting til the boat has completely stopped moving and then jumping out only to find the boat racing in the opposite direction.
