I apologize in advance if this has been stated before, but..
Why is water blue even in caves? That doesn't make much sense to me since water is only blue when it reflects the sky. I understand the blue color makes it easily identifiable, but shouldn't it be a little.. less blue? Or at least prone to color change depending on placement/biome?
Discuss.
EDIT: I think I was wrong in saying water is blue from the sky. However, I still think water should be a lot clearer and susceptible to color change.

so are you suggesting it should assume the color average of the blocks above and around it, so it looks more better and is more realistic? That's precarious!
Well for one thing water is actually blue, not just a reflection of the sky. Since I would understand that water would change colour due to the environment, (different particles dissolved, different types of light etc.) The hard thing. is replicating this in-game without becoming too complex.
The simple answer to your question is that in the game, water is blue. With the current light engine I don't see this changing, however since there is a new lighting system in 1.8 this might allow change. I have a hunch that water will probably receive some sort of update in the near future (1.9, 1.10 etc.)
Apologies for the horrible syntax, I am strangely still half asleep.

Thank you for the reply. I agree with you. I feel as though implementing a water color changing system would be difficult as it would require many different variables such as current biome, surrounding blocks, et cetera. It would pay off, though.
Pure water looks blue simply because it IS blue. Look it up on Wikipedia or something. I like the idea of different water colors, though. But what about when you pick it up in a bucket? Suddenly there needs to be a texture for 3 different colors of water in a bucket.

Firstly, I don't want to mention mods because the admins might ban me. Notch is working on it. In fact, he had the idea since 1.2 (which is when biomes were added)but he never got around to actually doing it. That's why the community did it for him.

and there is a mod out there somewhere that changes mc's water textures per biome
